Course overview
Environmental managers are expected to demonstrate that their management system controls significant impacts, meets legal and permit obligations, produces reliable performance data, and stands up to certification, regulator and customer scrutiny. At an advanced level, the challenge is not writing an ISO 14001 procedure; it is connecting aspects, risks, compliance obligations, objectives, operational controls, audit evidence and management review into a system that drives measurable environmental improvement. This course addresses the common gap between a documented EMS and one that is genuinely used to make operational and investment decisions.
Participants work through advanced ISO 14001:2015 implementation and improvement methods, including context and interested-party analysis, life-cycle perspective, environmental aspect significance scoring, compliance obligation registers, risk-based planning, operational control design, environmental KPI architecture and internal audit programmes. They learn to test controls against realistic scenarios such as chemical releases, waste contractor failures, energy-intensive operations, permit exceedances and supplier environmental risks. The course also covers root-cause analysis, corrective action verification, audit reporting and management-review inputs that lead to accountable decisions rather than closed actions.
Delivery combines instructor-led technical sessions with facilitated workshops using realistic site data, audit findings and EMS records. Participants build and critique registers, dashboards, audit plans and corrective-action evidence, then apply the methods to their own organisational context. Each participant leaves with an Advanced EMS Improvement Action Plan containing a prioritised gap assessment, selected KPIs, audit priorities, corrective-action approach and a 90-day implementation roadmap suitable for discussion with senior management.
The course is designed for experienced HSE and environmental professionals, internal auditors, operational leaders and consultants who already work with environmental controls or ISO 14001 systems and need to improve system maturity, assurance and performance.

Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have practical exposure to an environmental management system, environmental compliance programme or site-level environmental controls. They should understand the purpose of ISO 14001, basic environmental aspects and impacts, legal compliance, objectives and internal audits; prior experience using registers, procedures or audit checklists is strongly recommended. Familiarity with spreadsheets is useful because participants work with scoring models and KPI templates. A laptop with spreadsheet software is recommended for live online delivery. Formal lead-auditor training, prior certification-audit experience, advanced environmental science qualifications and specialist life-cycle assessment software are not required.
Training methodology
The course uses short instructor-led briefings to establish the ISO 14001 and ISO 19011 methods, followed by practical work with EMS artefacts rather than abstract discussion. Participants assess a simulated multi-site organisation’s aspects register, permits, procedures, audit evidence and performance data; then compare decisions in facilitated peer-review groups. Case studies include waste contractor failures, emissions exceedances and weak corrective actions. Daily exercises produce components of an individual EMS Improvement Action Plan, which is consolidated on day five through structured application planning and instructor feedback.

Day 1: EMS maturity and strategic context

- Scope boundary decisions for multi-site and outsourced activities
- Leadership accountability and environmental governance structures
- EMS maturity models and evidence-based gap assessment
- Life-cycle perspective in planning and operational decision-making
Workshop: Participants complete an EMS maturity gap assessment for a simulated manufacturing organisation and prioritise the five highest-risk system weaknesses.
Day 2: Risk, aspects and compliance obligations
- Environmental aspect identification across normal, abnormal and emergency conditions
- Significance scoring models using consequence, likelihood and control effectiveness
- Materiality thresholds and sensitivity analysis for aspect registers
- Compliance-obligations registers for legislation, permits and customer requirements

- Supplier, contractor and outsourced-process environmental risk controls
Workshop: Participants build a scored aspects and compliance-obligations register for a site with waste, water, chemical and air-emissions risks.
Day 3: Operational control and performance management

Day 4: Internal audit and corrective action assurance

- Audit planning, process trails and evidence sampling methods
- Interview techniques for testing control implementation
- Writing objective nonconformities and audit findings
- Root-cause analysis using five whys and fishbone diagrams

Workshop: Participants conduct a tabletop internal audit from a document pack, issue evidence-based findings and prepare a corrective-action verification plan.
Day 5: Management review and EMS improvement planning
