Course overview
Food security teams must turn uneven market prices, rainfall estimates, crop assessments, nutrition data, displacement figures and household survey results into defensible early warning conclusions. The difficulty is not simply finding indicators; it is judging their reliability, triangulating conflicting evidence, identifying the populations most exposed to deterioration, and communicating a realistic severity outlook before livelihoods are exhausted. Weak analysis can delay anticipatory action, misdirect limited assistance or produce scenario statements that decision-makers cannot use.
This advanced course develops the analytical workflow behind credible food security early warning. Participants apply the IPC analytical framework, construct indicator reference tables, assess evidence quality, analyse household food access and livelihood change, calculate and interpret market and seasonal anomalies, and build evidence-based scenarios. The course also covers geographic targeting with QGIS, spreadsheet-based trend analysis, uncertainty management, convergence of evidence, and the formulation of population estimates and response implications. Participants learn to distinguish hazard information from food security outcomes and to explain the causal pathways linking shocks to acute food insecurity.
Teaching combines instructor-led technical briefings with a sustained simulated crisis analysis. Working with a realistic multi-source evidence pack, participants clean and interrogate data, map affected areas, debate classification evidence, and prepare a concise early warning product for senior decision-makers. Each participant leaves with an annotated analysis workbook, an area-level evidence matrix, a scenario and assumptions log, and a draft food security early warning briefing that can be adapted for their programme or coordination context.
The course is designed for experienced analysts and technical staff in humanitarian agencies, governments, NGOs and donor organisations who already work with food security information and need stronger methods for classification, forecasting and action-oriented reporting.

Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have practical experience with food security, livelihoods, nutrition, agriculture, markets, disaster risk management or humanitarian needs assessment. The course assumes that participants can interpret percentages, rates, time series and basic maps, and that they understand core concepts such as household food access, coping strategies, seasonality, hazards and vulnerability. Familiarity with IPC terminology, Excel formulas and GIS is helpful but not essential; core functions used in the course are demonstrated. Programming experience, advanced statistics, remote-sensing processing skills and prior participation in an IPC analysis are not required.
Training methodology
The five days combine focused instructor-led demonstrations with an evolving simulated food security crisis. Participants work in small technical teams using rainfall, market, crop, nutrition, displacement and household evidence from a fictionalised response setting. Exercises include checking data credibility, calculating anomalies in Excel, mapping exposure in QGIS, completing an IPC-style evidence matrix, and negotiating scenario assumptions. Facilitated peer review tests the logic behind each conclusion. On the final day, participants convert their analysis into a senior-management briefing and a personal workplace application plan.

Day 1: Analytical foundations for food security early warning

Day 2: Analysing hazards, production and markets
