Course overview

Sustainability leaders are expected to convert broad ESG commitments into credible plans, measurable targets and defensible disclosures while balancing commercial priorities, regulatory scrutiny and stakeholder expectations. Many organisations still operate with disconnected environmental, social and governance initiatives, incomplete emissions data, weak supplier engagement and CSR programmes that cannot demonstrate material business or community outcomes. This course addresses the leadership challenge of building an integrated sustainability strategy that can withstand board challenge, investor questions, customer requirements and assurance review.

Participants examine how to identify material sustainability issues, set science-aligned priorities, establish governance, and translate strategy into accountable programmes. The course develops practical capability in double materiality assessment, stakeholder mapping, GHG inventory governance, Scope 3 engagement, ESG KPI design, sustainability risk management, human-rights due diligence and reporting alignment. Participants work with the GRI Standards, GHG Protocol, ISSB IFRS S1 and IFRS S2, and SASB Standards to connect operational data, strategic decision-making and external disclosure.

Delivery combines instructor-led strategy sessions with corporate case analysis, facilitated board-style discussions, data and reporting exercises, and peer review. Each participant develops a Sustainability and CSR Leadership Action Plan for their organisation or business unit, including a materiality map, priority initiatives, KPI scorecard, governance model, implementation roadmap and stakeholder communication approach. The result is a practical document that can be refined with internal sponsors after the course and used to structure a sustainability work programme.

The programme is suited to experienced HSE, ESG, CSR, risk, operations, procurement and corporate affairs professionals who already contribute to sustainability activity and now need to lead cross-functional strategy, reporting and change.

Course objectives

Requirements and prerequisites

Participants should have practical exposure to sustainability, CSR, HSE, ESG reporting, responsible sourcing or corporate risk management. They should understand basic environmental and social performance concepts, such as energy use, emissions, waste, health and safety, supplier requirements, stakeholder expectations and KPI reporting. Familiarity with spreadsheets and the ability to interpret operational data are assumed, as participants will work with emissions, materiality and performance-scorecard examples. Prior experience with GRI, ISSB, SASB or the GHG Protocol is helpful but not required. This is not a beginner introduction to sustainability terminology or climate science.

Training methodology

The five-day programme uses facilitated instructor-led sessions to introduce strategic frameworks, reporting requirements and governance decisions, followed by applied workshops using realistic corporate data. Participants assess a case organisation’s material issues, map stakeholders, test emissions-data controls, draft KPI definitions and compare disclosure choices against recognised standards. Small-group work simulates cross-functional leadership discussions involving finance, procurement, operations and communications. Each day adds a component to the final Sustainability and CSR Leadership Action Plan, which participants review with peers and refine during an end-of-course implementation clinic.

Workshop: Participants conduct a double materiality workshop for a case organisation and produce a ranked material-issues matrix with supporting stakeholder evidence.

Day 2: Climate, environmental performance and data governance

• GHG Protocol organisational boundaries and operational-control approaches
• Scope 1 and Scope 2 inventory methods and emissions-factor governance
• Scope 3 category screening and supplier-data engagement methods
• Climate target design, transition planning and target dependency mapping
• Environmental KPI selection for energy, water, waste and circularity programmes

Workshop: Participants create an emissions-data governance map identifying source systems, calculation owners, validation controls and evidence files for a selected Scope 3 category.

Day 3: Social impact, responsible business and CSR programme design

Workshop: Participants design a responsible-sourcing and CSR intervention plan that includes risk priorities, supplier actions, social KPIs and a remedy escalation route.

Day 4: Reporting, disclosure and executive decision-making
