Course overview

Agricultural extension officers are expected to convert research, market information and programme targets into advice that farmers can apply within a cropping season. The challenge is not simply knowing recommended practices: officers must diagnose production constraints accurately, work with different farmer groups, demonstrate techniques in the field, capture credible data and report results that managers and funders can use. Weak needs assessments, lecture-led farmer meetings and incomplete visit records can reduce adoption and obscure whether extension investment is improving yields, incomes or resilience.

This five-day course equips field officers to plan and deliver farmer-centred extension services. Participants practise rapid community and farm diagnosis, stakeholder and value-chain mapping, segmentation of farmer groups, seasonal extension planning, demonstration-plot design, farmer field school facilitation and participatory monitoring. They learn to structure advisory messages around crop calendars, good agricultural practices, climate and pest risks, input decisions and market requirements. The course also develops practical digital data-collection, mapping and reporting skills using KoboToolbox, QGIS and Microsoft Excel.

Teaching combines instructor-led technical sessions with field-based scenarios, advisory role plays, data exercises and group design workshops. Participants work through a realistic extension assignment for a defined crop and farmer community, from initial diagnosis through to follow-up monitoring. Each participant leaves with a job-ready Extension Service Delivery Plan containing a farmer segmentation profile, seasonal activity calendar, demonstration protocol, communication plan, KoboToolbox data form and results dashboard outline.

The course is designed for officers with some exposure to agricultural programmes who need a more disciplined, measurable approach to farmer advisory work.
