Finance teams often spend planning cycles consolidating spreadsheets, tracing broken links, reconciling departmental submissions, and explaining why forecast numbers changed. Anaplan provides a connected planning environment, but value depends on finance professionals being able to translate budgeting, forecasting, headcount, cost-centre, and P&L requirements into well-structured models. This course addresses the practical gap between understanding financial planning processes and building, operating, and reviewing those processes in Anaplan.

Participants learn how Anaplan models are structured and how to build finance planning applications using lists, hierarchies, modules, line items, versions, time settings, formulas, imports, actions, and user experiences. The course applies these capabilities to an integrated finance case: loading actuals, creating driver-based revenue and operating-expense forecasts, managing workforce assumptions, calculating variances, and rolling results into a management P&L. Participants also learn model-design disciplines that improve performance, auditability, and usability, including the DISCO approach, dimensionality choices, naming conventions, and formula design.

Delivery combines instructor demonstrations with guided model-building in Anaplan. Each participant works through a realistic planning scenario, diagnosing data issues, configuring assumptions, and presenting outputs through Anaplan UX pages. The final deliverable is a working finance planning model design and prototype containing input modules, calculation modules, reporting views, import actions, and a documented forecast process that can be adapted for the participant’s own planning cycle.

Requirements and prerequisites

No prior Anaplan experience is required; the course starts with navigation, model components, and core modelling concepts before progressing to formulas and UX pages. Participants do not need programming, SQL, API, or database-administration skills. A complete beginner to Anaplan should expect to build modules and reports during the first day rather than merely observe demonstrations.

Training methodology

The instructor introduces each Anaplan concept through a finance planning scenario, then participants build it in a guided model. Short demonstrations of lists, modules, formulas, actions, and UX pages are followed by individual exercises using actuals, headcount drivers, operating costs, and P&L outputs. Group reviews examine model-design choices, reconciliation failures, and reporting requirements from the perspective of finance stakeholders. On the final day, participants assemble their prototype and create an application plan identifying source data, planning owners, model outputs, and controls for their workplace.

Day 2: Building driver-based budgets and forecasts

  • Operating-expense planning using fixed and variable cost assumptions
  • Headcount, salary, and payroll-cost calculations

Day 3: Data loading, controls, and financial reconciliation

For live online delivery, participants need a laptop or desktop with a current browser, reliable internet access, and permission to access the training environment. Anaplan is browser-based, so local software installation is not normally required; access instructions are provided before the course.
