Course overview
ArcGIS Enterprise administrators are responsible for more than keeping a portal online. They must provide reliable access to authoritative maps, apps, imagery and geoprocessing services while controlling user privileges, protecting sensitive content, managing capacity and responding to failures. Poorly configured federation, sharing settings, data stores or security policies can create service outages, duplicate data, uncontrolled public exposure and slow map performance. This course addresses the operational decisions that determine whether an ArcGIS Enterprise deployment is a dependable organisational GIS platform.
Participants configure and administer the core components of ArcGIS Enterprise: Portal for ArcGIS, federated ArcGIS Server sites, ArcGIS Data Store and web adaptors. They work through identity management, role design, groups, sharing models, content governance, publishing workflows, service configuration, backup planning, logging and health monitoring. The course also covers practical approaches to troubleshooting service failures, reviewing portal and server logs, managing hosted feature layers, planning high-availability deployments and applying updates with controlled change procedures.
Training is delivered through instructor-led demonstrations and guided administration labs using a working ArcGIS Enterprise environment. Participants complete configuration tasks, diagnose deliberately introduced faults and make evidence-based administration decisions from logs, metrics and architecture diagrams. They leave with an ArcGIS Enterprise administration runbook containing a deployment inventory, user and privilege model, publishing and sharing controls, monitoring checklist, backup-and-recovery procedure and prioritised improvement plan that can be adapted for their own environment.

Requirements and prerequisites

Familiarity with Windows Server, DNS, HTTPS certificates, Active Directory or enterprise identity providers is helpful because these topics appear in administration scenarios. Prior command-line, Python, database administration or ArcGIS Enterprise installation experience is not required. This is not a beginner GIS course; complete newcomers should first gain hands-on ArcGIS Pro and web GIS experience.
Training methodology
Each day combines instructor-led architecture briefings with guided labs in a functioning ArcGIS Enterprise environment. Participants configure portal settings, federate services, publish layers, create roles and investigate faults using realistic logs and monitoring evidence. Short case discussions examine decisions such as public-data publishing, identity-provider integration, service ownership and recovery priorities. Working in pairs or small groups, participants review a deployment scenario and make documented configuration choices. The final day is an application-planning workshop in which each participant assembles an administration runbook and improvement backlog for a real or representative platform.

- Named users, member types, user types and licence allocation
- Groups, content ownership and authoritative-content designation
- Sharing levels, item security and public-content risk controls
- Portal content lifecycle policies for creation, review, archival and retirement

Day 2: Federation, hosting and service publishing
- ArcGIS Server site roles and service publishing architecture

- Relational, tile cache and spatiotemporal big data store purposes

Day 3: Security, identity and controlled access
