Course overview
Business intelligence teams often produce capable dashboards that do not answer the questions executives use to steer the business. Measures are selected because data is available, reporting is organised by system or department, and operational KPIs become disconnected from strategic priorities. This creates conflicting targets, delayed corrective action, and performance reviews dominated by data interpretation rather than decisions. The Balanced Scorecard provides a disciplined way to connect BI reporting with strategy, value drivers, accountable owners, and measurable outcomes across financial, customer, internal-process, and learning-and-growth perspectives.
This five-day course shows participants how to design, implement, and govern a Balanced Scorecard-supported business intelligence performance system. Participants translate strategic objectives into cause-and-effect strategy maps, define outcome and driver measures, write KPI specifications, set targets and thresholds, and build scorecard-ready data models. They learn to distinguish leading from lagging indicators, establish measure ownership, validate data quality, design drill-through reporting, and use Power BI to present performance status, trends, exceptions, and strategic initiatives. The course also addresses governance routines, performance-review agendas, and the practical controls needed to prevent metric gaming and inconsistent KPI definitions.
Teaching combines instructor-led explanation with a sustained business case, KPI design clinics, scorecard critique sessions, and guided Power BI exercises. Participants work from a realistic organisational strategy and progressively build a four-perspective scorecard, strategy map, KPI dictionary, target-setting approach, and prototype executive dashboard. They leave with a reusable Balanced Scorecard implementation pack and an action plan for applying it to their own BI environment, whether they work in a corporate performance office, data team, transformation programme, or operational function.
The course is best suited to professionals who already work with reporting, KPIs, data analysis, or strategic planning and need to make performance information more decision-ready and strategically coherent.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Construct a four-perspective Balanced Scorecard linked to stated strategic objectives
- Create a cause-and-effect strategy map showing strategic themes, value drivers, and dependencies
- Define leading and lagging KPIs using measurable formulas, owners, sources, frequencies, and thresholds
- Produce a controlled KPI dictionary with business definitions, calculation rules, and data-quality checks
- Set performance targets and RAG thresholds using baselines, benchmarks, tolerances, and forecast assumptions
- Model scorecard measures in Power BI using star-schema principles and DAX calculations
- Design executive scorecard dashboards with drill-through, exception views, trend analysis, and initiative tracking
- Establish a performance-management governance cadence with review packs, escalation rules, and accountable measure owners
Benefits of attending
For you
- Gain a repeatable method for turning strategic plans into measurable BI requirements rather than isolated dashboard requests
- Build credibility in executive performance discussions by defining KPIs with explicit formulas, owners, targets, and evidence
- Add strategy-map and Balanced Scorecard design capability to a BI, analytics, performance-management, or transformation portfolio
- Learn to challenge weak or misleading KPIs using leading-lagging logic, cause-and-effect relationships, and data-quality criteria
- Leave with a worked scorecard pack that can be adapted as a portfolio example or applied to a live workplace initiative
For your organisation
- Creates a common KPI language across strategy, finance, operations, and data teams through controlled metric definitions
- Reduces duplicate reporting and conflicting measures by linking dashboards to a single approved scorecard structure
- Improves executive decision-making through exception-based views, target variance analysis, and accountable action tracking
- Strengthens data governance by documenting measure lineage, calculation rules, ownership, refresh frequency, and quality controls
- Connects transformation and operational initiatives to strategic objectives so benefits can be monitored beyond delivery milestones
Target competencies
Who should attend
- Business Intelligence Managers — who must align dashboards, reporting backlogs, and data products with enterprise strategy
- Performance Management Managers — who need a governed scorecard that supports disciplined executive review meetings
- Data and Analytics Leaders — who must convert strategic questions into trusted measures and reusable semantic models
- Strategy and Transformation Managers — who translate strategic plans into measurable objectives, initiatives, and targets
- Senior Data Analysts — who design KPI calculations and executive reporting for operational and strategic stakeholders
- PMO and Portfolio Managers — who need to connect programme benefits, milestone performance, and strategic objectives
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have practical experience working with KPIs, management reports, dashboards, operational data, or business planning. They should understand basic concepts such as measures, dimensions, targets, variance, data sources, and stakeholder requirements. Familiarity with Excel formulas and basic Power BI report use is helpful; participants who will build the dashboard exercises should be comfortable importing data, creating visuals, and navigating Power BI Desktop. Prior Balanced Scorecard experience is not required, and neither advanced statistics, programming, nor prior DAX development is assumed. The course teaches the scorecard method and introduces the DAX measures needed for the exercises.
Training methodology
The programme uses a single business case to connect each day’s work, from strategic objectives through to an executive scorecard dashboard and review process. Short instructor-led modules introduce Kaplan and Norton Balanced Scorecard concepts, KPI design rules, data-model decisions, and governance practices. Participants then work in pairs and small groups to critique existing measures, map strategic cause-and-effect links, write KPI specifications, and develop Power BI visuals from supplied data. Daily feedback sessions test whether each measure supports a decision. The final workshop converts the completed scorecard into a practical implementation roadmap for participants’ own organisations.
