Course overview
Finance teams are often measured on revenue, margin, cash flow and cost control, yet their reporting can remain disconnected from strategic priorities and operational drivers. This course addresses the gap between periodic financial reporting and active performance management. Participants learn how to use the Balanced Scorecard to translate strategy into a connected set of financial objectives, measures, targets, initiatives and review routines that show whether financial results are sustainable—not merely whether a month-end target was met.
The course covers Kaplan and Norton’s Balanced Scorecard method with a finance-led application. Participants define financial perspectives and strategic themes; build strategy maps; distinguish outcome measures from leading indicators; create KPI definitions; set baselines, targets and thresholds; link financial indicators to customer, process and capability drivers; and design performance reports. They also practise validating data sources, analysing variance, assigning measure ownership, and connecting scorecard initiatives to budgets, forecasts and management-accounting decisions.
Instruction combines focused teaching, worked financial examples, Excel-based KPI design, Power BI dashboard concepts, team critique and a multi-day case study. Each participant develops a draft financial performance scorecard for a realistic business unit, including a strategy map, KPI dictionary, target-setting logic, governance roles and a reporting prototype. The result is a usable template and implementation plan that can be adapted for finance business partnering, FP&A, controllership or business-unit performance reviews.
The programme is suited to finance professionals who need to move beyond isolated ratios and budget variances, as well as managers responsible for aligning financial performance measures with operational action.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Construct a finance-led Balanced Scorecard using the Kaplan and Norton four-perspective framework
- Develop a strategy map that links revenue, margin, cash flow and return measures to operational drivers
- Define financial and non-financial KPIs using a measure dictionary with formulas, owners, sources and reporting frequencies
- Differentiate lagging financial outcomes from leading indicators that predict future performance
- Set KPI baselines, targets, tolerance bands and escalation thresholds using historical and forecast data
- Integrate scorecard measures with budgets, rolling forecasts, variance analysis and investment initiatives
- Build an Excel-based scorecard reporting template and specify Power BI dashboard requirements
- Produce a Balanced Scorecard implementation plan covering governance, review cadence, accountability and corrective action
Benefits of attending

Target competencies
Who should attend
- Finance Managers — who need to connect team performance measures to business strategy and management action
- FP&A Managers and Analysts — who prepare forecasts and performance packs for senior decision-makers
- Management Accountants — who translate financial and operational data into business-unit performance insight
- Financial Controllers — who require consistent KPI definitions, data ownership and reporting controls
- Finance Business Partners — who must challenge operational leaders on the drivers behind financial results
- Business Unit Managers — who are accountable for profit, cash, cost and strategic delivery
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should be comfortable reading an income statement, balance sheet and cash-flow statement, and should understand basic concepts such as budget, forecast, actual-versus-budget variance, gross margin and working capital. Experience preparing management reports, operating plans or KPI packs is helpful but not essential. Participants should also be able to work with basic Excel functions, tables and charts. No prior Balanced Scorecard training, Power BI expertise, programming knowledge or advanced statistical modelling is required. Complete beginners to performance management can attend, but should expect to spend time practising financial KPI logic and strategy-map terminology.
Training methodology
The instructor uses a finance-business-unit case throughout the five days, moving from strategic objectives to measures, targets, reporting and review action. Short taught modules introduce the Balanced Scorecard method, followed by Excel-based KPI calculations, strategy-map workshops, scorecard critique and facilitated discussion of reporting trade-offs. Teams test whether proposed measures are controllable, auditable and linked by cause and effect. On the final day, participants refine their own scorecard draft and present an application plan covering data, governance, review meetings and first-quarter implementation priorities.
