Course overview
Executives are often asked to deliver strategic change while managing disconnected plans, overloaded KPI reports, competing departmental priorities and quarterly pressure for results. A Balanced Scorecard provides a disciplined way to translate strategy into a manageable set of objectives, measures, targets and initiatives across financial, customer, internal process, and learning and growth perspectives. This course addresses the practical challenge of making strategy visible, owned and reviewable rather than leaving it as a board presentation or annual planning document.
Participants learn to build a strategy map that shows cause-and-effect logic, define outcome and driver measures, set credible targets, and select initiatives that directly support strategic objectives. The course examines executive scorecard governance, cascading scorecards to business units, aligning budgets and operating plans, and running strategy review meetings that distinguish performance management from strategic learning. Participants also work with KPI definitions, data quality controls, RAG status rules, performance dashboards and corrective-action registers.
Instruction combines executive-level briefings with case analysis, facilitated design workshops and scorecard critique sessions. Participants apply the Balanced Scorecard framework to a real organisation or a detailed business case, testing whether their strategic objectives, measures and initiatives form a coherent system. They leave with a draft executive Balanced Scorecard pack: a strategy map, objective statements, KPI dictionary, target-setting approach, initiative portfolio and a 90-day implementation plan suitable for executive review.
The course is designed for leaders responsible for strategy execution, business performance, transformation portfolios or cross-functional operating results. It is particularly valuable where an organisation needs to replace fragmented reporting with a consistent strategy-management rhythm.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Construct a four-perspective strategy map with explicit cause-and-effect links between strategic objectives
- Define Balanced Scorecard objectives using outcome measures, performance drivers and accountable owners
- Develop a KPI dictionary specifying formulas, data sources, reporting frequency, thresholds and measure owners
- Set evidence-based performance targets using baselines, benchmarking, forecast ranges and strategic ambition
- Prioritise strategic initiatives through objective alignment, benefits, dependencies, resource requirements and risk
- Cascade an executive scorecard into business-unit and functional scorecards without losing strategic line of sight
- Facilitate a strategy review meeting using variance analysis, root-cause questions and corrective-action tracking
- Produce an executive Balanced Scorecard implementation roadmap covering governance, data controls and review cadence
Benefits of attending
For you
- Gain a practical method for converting executive strategy into objectives, measures, targets and funded initiatives
- Build credibility in board and executive discussions by distinguishing leading indicators from lagging outcome measures
- Learn to challenge weak KPIs, ambiguous ownership and unsupported targets using a structured scorecard design process
- Develop facilitation capability for strategy review meetings focused on decisions, learning and corrective action
- Leave with an executive-ready scorecard pack that can support a strategy, transformation or performance leadership role
For your organisation
- Creates a common strategic language across executive, business-unit and functional leadership teams

Target competencies
Who should attend
- Chief Executives and Managing Directors — who need a repeatable system for turning enterprise strategy into accountable action
- Executive Directors and Business Unit Heads — who must align operating priorities, investment decisions and performance measures
- Strategy Directors and Strategy Managers — who design corporate planning cycles and lead strategy execution programmes
- Chief Operating Officers and Operations Directors — who need to connect process performance with strategic outcomes
- Transformation and PMO Leaders — who govern initiative portfolios and need to demonstrate contribution to strategic objectives
- Finance Directors and FP&A Leaders — who link targets, budgets, forecasts and executive performance reporting
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have experience contributing to annual plans, business performance reviews, transformation programmes or departmental KPI reporting. They should understand their organisation’s strategic priorities, operating model and principal financial or operational measures. Familiarity with spreadsheets and presentation software is assumed, as participants will work with KPI definitions, targets and scorecard templates. Prior exposure to strategy maps, Balanced Scorecards or formal performance-management frameworks is helpful but not required. No specialist analytics software, statistical modelling expertise or prior certification in strategy management is required.
Training methodology
The course uses short instructor-led modules to introduce the Balanced Scorecard method, followed by structured workshops in which participants build and test each component. Executive case studies expose common failure modes, including excessive measures, untestable cause-and-effect claims and initiative lists detached from strategy. Small groups review scorecard evidence, challenge KPI definitions and conduct simulated strategy review meetings. Throughout the week, participants develop a scorecard for their own organisation or a supplied case, culminating in a facilitated implementation-planning session.
