Course overview
Banking and insurance operations teams handle transactions, customer records, policy administration, claims, payments and regulatory controls where small processing errors can create financial loss, customer complaints or compliance exposure. Professionals moving into these functions need more than product awareness: they must understand how an instruction travels through an operational workflow, where controls sit, how exceptions are investigated and how records support auditability.
This five-day course builds practical foundations across retail and commercial banking operations, insurance policy and claims administration, payment processing, reconciliation, customer due diligence and operational risk. Participants learn to map end-to-end processes, distinguish front-, middle- and back-office responsibilities, apply maker-checker controls, investigate reconciliation breaks, interpret core insurance documents and use escalation routes for suspicious, incomplete or disputed transactions. The course also introduces the operational relevance of SWIFT messaging, ISO 20022 payment data, ACORD insurance data standards and Excel-based control logs.
Delivery combines instructor-led explanations with realistic processing scenarios, document reviews, control-design exercises and team-based case work. Participants complete a capstone operational control pack containing a process map, risk-and-control matrix, exception log, reconciliation checklist and service-level escalation plan that can be adapted for their own department. They receive a certificate on completion and leave with a structured reference for applying consistent operational controls.
The programme is suited to professionals who already work around banking, insurance, finance, customer service or operations and now need a disciplined understanding of the processes and controls behind regulated financial services.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Map an end-to-end banking transaction workflow from customer instruction through settlement, reconciliation and record retention
- Differentiate front-office, middle-office and back-office responsibilities using a banking operating model
- Apply maker-checker, segregation-of-duties and approval controls to routine banking and insurance transactions
- Investigate a reconciliation break using transaction references, exception logs and ageing analysis
- Interpret core insurance policy, endorsement, premium, claim and reserve documentation for operational processing
- Perform customer due diligence checks and identify escalation triggers for suspicious or incomplete activity
- Use Excel control logs to track operational exceptions, service-level deadlines and resolution ownership
- Produce a risk-and-control matrix and escalation plan for a banking or insurance operations process
Benefits of attending
For you
- Build confidence discussing payment, policy, claim and reconciliation workflows with operational and risk colleagues
- Gain a reusable method for documenting exceptions, ownership, deadlines and evidence trails
- Recognise control failures before they become unresolved customer, financial or audit issues
- Strengthen eligibility for banking operations, insurance administration, claims support and reconciliation roles
- Create a practical control pack that demonstrates applied financial-services operations capability
For your organisation
- Reduce processing errors by giving staff a common workflow and control vocabulary across banking and insurance activities
- Improve exception resolution through clearer logging, ageing analysis, ownership and escalation deadlines
- Strengthen audit readiness with better evidence retention, approval checks and documented control points
- Lower operational risk by improving staff recognition of incomplete, unusual or potentially suspicious transactions
- Increase consistency between customer-facing teams, processing teams, finance and compliance functions
Target competencies
Who should attend
- Banking Operations Officers — who process payments, account maintenance, settlements or transaction exceptions
- Insurance Operations Administrators — who support policy issuance, endorsements, premium processing or claims workflows
- Claims Handlers — who need stronger control over claim documentation, payment authority and escalation routes
- Customer Service and Branch Operations Staff — who must recognise when customer requests require operational verification or referral
- Finance and Reconciliation Analysts — who investigate cash, premium, payment and ledger mismatches
- New Team Leaders in Financial Services Operations — who need to supervise controlled workflows and exception management
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should be comfortable with basic financial-services terminology such as accounts, payments, premiums, claims, customers, invoices and reconciliations. Experience in a bank, insurer, broker, finance department, contact centre or shared-services operation is helpful because exercises use realistic operational documents and exceptions. Participants should also be able to work with simple Excel tables, filters and formulas; advanced spreadsheet modelling is not required. No prior knowledge of SWIFT, ISO 20022, ACORD, insurance reserving, accounting standards or regulatory law is required. Complete beginners can attend, but should expect a concentrated introduction to industry workflows and control language.
Training methodology
The instructor uses short, structured teaching segments to explain banking and insurance operating models, followed by document-based exercises using payment instructions, policy schedules, claim files, reconciliation reports and exception registers. Teams map workflows, identify hand-offs and place control points using realistic scenarios such as a failed payment, missing KYC evidence or disputed claim settlement. Participants work in Excel on an exception log and ageing report, then receive facilitator feedback on evidence quality, escalation decisions and control design. The final session converts the capstone control pack into an individual workplace application plan.
