Course overview
Tax teams lose billable time when return preparation, review notes, source documents, e-file status, and due-date ownership are managed in separate places. CCH Axcess Tax can standardise those activities, but only when staff know how to configure returns correctly, apply diagnostics consistently, manage electronic filing exceptions, and connect tax work to a controlled workflow. This course addresses the practical operating gap between knowing tax compliance rules and executing a reliable, review-ready process inside the CCH Axcess environment.
Participants work through the complete preparation lifecycle in CCH Axcess Tax: creating and organising client returns, entering and importing tax data, applying return settings, using forms and input sheets, resolving diagnostics, managing reviewer notes, producing client deliverables, and monitoring e-file submissions. The course also covers workflow design using CCH Axcess Workstream, including project templates, routing, due dates, status codes, responsibilities, and dashboard reporting. Participants learn how to build repeatable procedures for individual and business returns while retaining an auditable record of preparation and review.
Instruction combines guided system demonstrations with hands-on return-building exercises, realistic exception scenarios, and workflow design workshops. Participants complete a capstone case that takes a client return from setup through diagnostics, review, delivery, and e-file tracking. They leave with a documented CCH Axcess Tax preparation and workflow playbook, including a return checklist, diagnostic-resolution log, reviewer-note protocol, and configurable workflow template that can be adapted to their firm's processes.
The course is designed for experienced tax preparers, reviewers, tax operations staff, and managers who already understand core tax return concepts and need to use CCH Axcess Tax with greater consistency, control, and visibility.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

- Apply reviewer notes, return locks, status controls, and sign-off procedures to manage a traceable tax review cycle
- Prepare client-ready return packages, filing instructions, extensions, and electronic filing deliverables
- Track IRS Modernized e-File acknowledgements, rejections, corrections, and resubmissions through a controlled exception process

Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have practical experience preparing or reviewing U.S. federal tax returns and be comfortable with concepts such as source-document intake, tax forms, extensions, diagnostics, review notes, e-file acknowledgements, and due dates. Familiarity with the navigation of CCH Axcess Tax is helpful, but prior advanced configuration experience is not required. Participants should be able to use a web browser, Microsoft Excel, and shared electronic documents confidently. The course does not require programming, database administration, or prior CCH Axcess Workstream design experience. It is not intended as an introduction to tax law or basic return preparation.
Training methodology
The instructor uses a simulated CCH Axcess environment to demonstrate each stage of a tax engagement before participants complete the same task in guided exercises. Cases include an individual return, a business return, incomplete source data, diagnostic exceptions, reviewer queries, and an e-file rejection. Small-group workshops focus on designing task sequences and accountability rules in CCH Axcess Workstream. Each day closes with a practical output, and the final session converts these outputs into an implementation plan for the participant's own tax team.
