Course overview
Professionals often have sound proposals, well-supported recommendations and legitimate requests, yet struggle to gain timely agreement from stakeholders. Decisions stall when messages rely only on facts, when benefits are framed from the sender’s perspective, or when people sense pressure rather than relevance. This course addresses the practical challenge of influencing decisions ethically across meetings, emails, presentations, negotiations and internal change conversations using Robert Cialdini’s evidence-based principles of persuasion.
Participants learn to diagnose an audience’s motivations, select appropriate influence principles and construct messages that make action easier to justify. The course covers reciprocity, commitment and consistency, social proof, liking, authority, scarcity and unity, together with Cialdini’s pre-suasion techniques for directing attention before a request is made. Participants practise turning technical, commercial and operational messages into audience-centred communications; using credible evidence without overstating claims; designing low-risk commitments; and responding appropriately when persuasion techniques are used on them.
Delivery combines instructor-led explanation, analysis of workplace cases, message clinics, role-played stakeholder conversations and peer feedback. Participants work on a live communication challenge from their role, such as securing project sponsorship, gaining approval for a proposal, encouraging adoption of a new process or influencing a cross-functional decision. They leave with an Ethical Persuasion Communication Plan containing stakeholder analysis, influence choices, supporting evidence, a message sequence, draft communications and safeguards against manipulation.
The programme is suited to professionals who already communicate regularly with colleagues, customers, leaders or partners and need a more deliberate method for gaining commitment without relying on seniority, authority or aggressive selling.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Diagnose stakeholder motivations, objections and decision criteria using an influence mapping template
- Apply Cialdini’s seven principles to business emails, meetings, presentations and requests
- Frame reciprocal value exchanges that encourage action without creating inappropriate obligation
- Design commitment ladders that convert broad support into specific, observable next steps
- Use relevant social proof, authority signals and evidence sources to strengthen recommendation credibility
- Create ethical scarcity and unity messages that establish urgency and shared identity without deception
- Plan pre-suasion cues that focus audience attention before a proposal, conversation or negotiation
- Produce an Ethical Persuasion Communication Plan for a current workplace influence challenge
Benefits of attending
For you
- Build a repeatable method for gaining agreement on proposals rather than relying on personality or seniority
- Improve credibility by matching evidence, authority signals and social proof to the audience’s decision context
- Handle cross-functional resistance with structured commitment questions and lower-risk next-step requests
- Recognise undue influence tactics and protect professional judgement in supplier, customer and internal conversations
- Leave with a work-ready persuasion plan and message portfolio that can support promotion into stakeholder-facing roles
For your organisation
- Increase the quality of business cases, project requests and change communications presented to decision-makers
- Reduce avoidable approval delays by clarifying stakeholder value, proof points and specific commitments
- Create more consistent ethical influence practices across customer, supplier and internal communications
- Improve adoption of new processes by using credible peer examples, relevant authority and shared identity
- Lower reputational and compliance risk by teaching staff to distinguish ethical persuasion from manipulation
Target competencies
Who should attend
- Project Managers — who need sponsors, team members and business units to commit to project decisions
- Business Development Managers — who must build buyer confidence and progress complex sales conversations
- Team Leaders — who need voluntary buy-in for priorities, process changes and shared standards
- Consultants — who must translate expert recommendations into client action and stakeholder agreement
- Change Managers — who need employees and managers to adopt new behaviours and operating practices
- Procurement and Commercial Professionals — who influence suppliers, internal customers and negotiation outcomes
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have experience communicating in a professional setting and should bring one current influence challenge: for example, a proposal requiring approval, a stakeholder meeting, a change announcement or a difficult request. Familiarity with basic business writing, meeting participation and presentation structure is assumed. Participants should be comfortable discussing realistic workplace scenarios and receiving peer feedback on draft messages. No psychology qualification, sales training, negotiation certification or prior study of Cialdini’s work is required. A laptop with access to Microsoft Word, PowerPoint or equivalent document tools is recommended for the message-design workshops.
Training methodology
The instructor introduces each Cialdini principle through business examples, behavioural research and short demonstrations, then participants test it in structured exercises. Message clinics use anonymised emails, proposals and stakeholder scenarios to identify weak framing, missing proof and inappropriate pressure. Small groups build persuasion sequences for cases involving project sponsorship, change adoption and commercial proposals, using Miro boards and communication templates. Role plays provide practice in making requests, securing commitments and responding to resistance. On Day 5, each participant refines a live workplace application plan with instructor and peer review.
