Course overview
Construction projects bring together changing work fronts, multiple contractors, mobile plant, temporary works, work at height, excavation and high-risk energy sources. Safety failures are rarely caused by one missing rule; they stem from weak planning, unclear interfaces, inadequate supervision, poor control verification and risk assessments that do not reflect site conditions. This course equips experienced construction personnel to establish and operate practical occupational health and safety controls that stand up to daily site realities, client scrutiny and regulatory inspection.
Participants examine how to translate legal duties and ISO 45001 principles into site-level systems. They learn to plan risk controls using task risk assessments, job hazard analysis, permits to work, lifting plans, inspection regimes and contractor management processes. The course addresses leading construction hazards including falls, scaffolds, excavation collapse, confined spaces, temporary works, plant–pedestrian interaction, electrical work, silica dust, noise and manual handling. Participants also practise incident investigation, root-cause analysis, corrective-action tracking and safety performance measurement.
Delivery combines instructor-led technical sessions with construction scenarios, document reviews and facilitated workshops. Participants work with realistic site packs, including RAMS, permit forms, inspection records, incident evidence and subcontractor documentation. They leave with a construction site OHS action plan containing a risk-control register, inspection and assurance schedule, contractor interface controls, incident-investigation workflow and prioritised improvement actions that can be adapted for their own project or organisation.

- Conduct task-based risk assessments using hazard identification, risk ranking and the hierarchy of controls
- Develop construction RAMS that link work activities, control measures, responsible persons and verification points
- Apply permit-to-work controls for excavation, confined space, hot work, electrical isolation and high-risk activities
- Design inspection and assurance schedules for scaffolds, excavations, lifting equipment, plant and temporary works
- Evaluate contractor safety documentation using prequalification, mobilisation and work-interface criteria
- Investigate construction incidents using evidence collection, causal analysis and corrective-action tracking
- Calculate and interpret leading and lagging safety indicators for site management reporting
- Produce a site-specific OHS action plan with prioritised controls, owners, dates and assurance measures

Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have practical exposure to construction operations, site supervision, project delivery or health and safety responsibilities. They should already understand basic hazard identification, personal protective equipment, toolbox talks and the purpose of a risk assessment. Familiarity with common site documents such as method statements, permits, inspection checklists or incident reports is useful, but participants do not need to be expert authors of them. No prior ISO 45001 auditor qualification, legal qualification, specialist engineering licence or safety software is required. A laptop is helpful for workshop templates, but not essential.
Training methodology
An experienced construction safety instructor leads focused sessions using site drawings, photographs, RAMS extracts, permits, inspection records and incident evidence. Participants assess realistic scenarios in small groups, including excavation work beside live services, crane operations near public interfaces and a fall-from-height event. Workshops require participants to identify control gaps, revise documents and justify decisions against recognised standards. Daily debriefs connect technical controls to supervisory practice. On the final day, each participant develops an implementation plan for a current or anticipated site challenge.

Day 1: Construction OHS governance and risk control
- Construction duty-holder roles and contractor accountability

Workshop: Participants review a flawed excavation RAMS and produce a revised task risk assessment with verifiable controls and responsible roles.
Day 2: Managing high-risk construction work
- Work-at-height planning, fall prevention and rescue readiness
- Scaffold inspection tags, handover records and alteration control
- Excavation support, service detection and spoil management
- Confined-space entry assessment and emergency arrangements
- Permit-to-work systems for hot work and electrical isolation
- Lifting plans, exclusion zones and lifting-operation supervision
- Temporary works coordination and change-control interfaces
Workshop: Teams build a permit and control pack for a combined excavation, lifting and hot-work activity on an active site.
Day 3: Health hazards, plant and workforce protection
- Respirable crystalline silica exposure assessment and control
- Noise, vibration and occupational-health surveillance triggers
- Hazardous substances assessment using safety data sheets
- Plant–pedestrian segregation plans and traffic management
- Plant pre-use checks, maintenance records and operator competence
- Manual handling assessment for construction materials
- Welfare facilities, fatigue management and heat-stress controls
Workshop: Participants create a plant–pedestrian segregation plan and occupational-health control register from a site logistics scenario.
Day 4: Assurance, contractor management and incident learning
- Contractor prequalification and mobilisation safety checks
- Subcontractor interface management and coordination meetings
- Field inspections, behavioural observations and close-out evidence
- Audit sampling and nonconformance classification
- Incident scene preservation and evidence collection
- Five Whys, barrier analysis and causal-factor mapping
- Corrective-action registers and effectiveness verification
Workshop: Using witness statements, photographs and inspection records, participants investigate a scaffold fall incident and produce a corrective-action register.
Day 5: Performance management and site implementation
