Course overview
Business teams often inherit contracts after signature, then struggle to locate obligations, identify renewal dates, coordinate approvals, or prove that suppliers and internal owners have met agreed commitments. These gaps create missed notice periods, uncontrolled scope changes, delayed revenue recognition, disputed service levels, and weak audit trails. Contract lifecycle management (CLM) gives business users a disciplined operating model for moving agreements from intake through authoring, approval, signature, performance, renewal, and close-out without treating contracts as documents that disappear into a shared drive.
This course teaches participants how to map a practical contract lifecycle, establish ownership and decision rights, classify contract risk, build clause and template controls, and manage approval workflows. Participants learn to create obligation registers, milestone trackers, renewal calendars, contract metadata standards, and performance-review routines. They also examine how CLM platforms such as DocuSign CLM and Icertis Contract Intelligence support repository control, automated routing, version history, reporting, and notifications—while recognising the governance and data quality needed before automation delivers value.
Instruction combines short expert-led sessions with contract-file analysis, workflow design, negotiation handover scenarios, and operational case studies. Working with a realistic supplier services agreement, each participant develops a Contract Lifecycle Management Playbook containing a lifecycle map, RACI, intake checklist, metadata schema, obligation register, approval matrix, and renewal-control process. This deliverable can be adapted for use with the participant’s own contract categories, whether procurement, sales, operations, technology, facilities, or professional services.
The course is designed for business professionals who work with contracts but are not necessarily lawyers or CLM system administrators. It is particularly valuable for teams seeking more reliable controls between commercial negotiation, legal review, supplier management, finance, and day-to-day service delivery.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Map an end-to-end contract lifecycle from request intake through renewal, termination, and archive
- Define contract ownership using a RACI matrix for business, procurement, legal, finance, and operational stakeholders
- Create a contract metadata schema that supports searchable repositories, reporting, and renewal controls
- Build an obligation register linking contractual commitments to owners, evidence, due dates, and escalation actions
- Design approval workflows and delegation rules for contract risk, value, non-standard terms, and exceptions
- Apply clause-library and template governance to control versioning and reduce unmanaged contract variation
- Configure requirements for renewal alerts, milestone tracking, and performance reporting in a CLM environment
- Produce a Contract Lifecycle Management Playbook for a defined contract category or business process
Benefits of attending
For you
- Gain a practical framework for turning signed agreements into owned actions, dates, evidence, and escalation points
- Build confidence when coordinating legal, procurement, finance, and operational stakeholders around contract decisions
- Learn to specify CLM workflow and reporting requirements without needing to be a platform administrator
- Create a portfolio-ready Contract Lifecycle Management Playbook that demonstrates process-design capability
- Strengthen credibility for contract management, commercial operations, procurement operations, and vendor-management roles
For your organisation
- Reduce missed renewals, notice periods, and contractual milestones through assigned ownership and alert controls
- Improve audit readiness with consistent metadata, approval records, version history, and obligation evidence
- Shorten contract cycle times by defining intake requirements, approval thresholds, templates, and exception routes
- Increase supplier and customer performance visibility through obligation registers and structured review routines
- Create clearer requirements for CLM platform adoption, repository clean-up, and process standardisation
Target competencies
Who should attend
- Contract Managers — who need repeatable controls for obligations, changes, renewals, and close-out
- Procurement Managers — who must hand awarded supplier contracts into effective operational management
- Commercial Managers — who oversee customer or supplier agreements and need clear approval and risk controls
- Operations Managers — who own delivery commitments and need visibility of contract obligations and service levels
- Project Managers — who administer contract milestones, variations, acceptance criteria, and stakeholder actions
- Business Analysts — who translate contract processes into workflow, metadata, reporting, and CLM system requirements
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have practical exposure to business contracts, purchase orders, statements of work, supplier agreements, customer agreements, or contract-related approval processes. They should understand basic terms such as parties, scope, term, pricing, deliverables, amendment, renewal, and termination, and be comfortable using spreadsheets and shared document repositories. Experience with a CLM platform is helpful but not required. This is not a legal drafting course: participants do not need a law degree, advanced negotiation training, coding skills, or system-administration experience. Complete beginners to contracts should expect to spend time reviewing the pre-course glossary and sample agreement provided.
Training methodology
The course uses instructor-led explanation to establish the CLM operating model, followed by hands-on work with a realistic contract pack containing a master services agreement, statement of work, amendment, service-level schedule, and renewal clause. Participants analyse contract data, build trackers in spreadsheet templates, map workflows, and test stakeholder decisions through group scenarios. Demonstrations show how repository, workflow, alert, and reporting features operate in leading CLM tools. Each day adds a component to an individual CLM Playbook, culminating in a peer-reviewed implementation plan for the participant’s workplace.
Course outline
