Course overview
Vice Presidents of Strategy are expected to turn an approved strategic plan into measurable enterprise action while managing conflicting priorities, constrained investment capacity, and executive scrutiny. The challenge is rarely defining strategic ambition; it is converting ambition into a portfolio of initiatives, clear accountabilities, resource decisions, operating rhythms, and evidence that execution is producing the intended business outcomes. This course addresses the gap between strategy formulation and delivery through practical execution architecture designed for complex organisations.
Participants learn to build a strategy execution system that links enterprise objectives, strategic themes, value drivers, KPIs, initiatives, budgets, risks, and leadership governance. They use strategy maps and Balanced Scorecard logic to translate strategic choices into measurable objectives; apply portfolio prioritisation and benefits-realisation methods to decide what should be funded, stopped, accelerated, or sequenced; and establish executive review cadences that distinguish operational performance issues from strategic assumptions requiring adjustment.
The programme is delivered through facilitated executive workshops, applied case analysis, peer challenge sessions, and structured work on a live or representative strategy. Participants leave with a board-ready Strategy Execution Blueprint: a strategy map, KPI hierarchy, initiative portfolio, governance calendar, decision-rights model, risk register, and 90-day mobilisation plan. This gives both the participant and sponsoring organisation a usable basis for improving alignment and execution discipline immediately after the course.
The course is designed for senior strategy leaders working across business units, corporate functions, transformation offices, or enterprise portfolio teams. It is particularly relevant where strategy is sound but delivery is fragmented, performance reporting is backward-looking, or senior forums do not consistently convert insight into decisions.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Translate enterprise strategic choices into a strategy map with strategic themes, objectives, value drivers, and cause-and-effect relationships
- Design a Balanced Scorecard KPI hierarchy that links board measures, executive measures, operational indicators, targets, and data owners
- Prioritise a strategic initiative portfolio using value, feasibility, dependency, risk, capacity, and benefits-realisation criteria
- Build a benefits-realisation plan that defines baseline measures, benefit owners, milestones, assumptions, and verification methods
- Establish decision rights using a RAPID model for strategic investments, cross-functional initiatives, and escalation decisions
- Create an executive strategy review cadence with leading indicators, exception thresholds, action logs, and decision records
- Apply scenario planning and strategic risk analysis to test assumptions, trigger points, and contingency responses
- Produce a 90-day Strategy Execution Blueprint for mobilising governance, measures, initiatives, and stakeholder communication
Benefits of attending
For you
- Gain a repeatable method for moving from strategic intent to funded initiatives, accountable owners, and measurable outcomes
- Strengthen credibility in executive forums by presenting strategy performance through leading indicators, decision thresholds, and evidence-based recommendations
- Develop the ability to challenge low-value initiatives using transparent portfolio scoring and capacity analysis
- Build a board-ready execution artefact that can be adapted for the participant's own enterprise or business unit
- Increase readiness for Chief Strategy Officer, transformation leadership, and enterprise portfolio governance responsibilities
For your organisation
- Creates stronger alignment between corporate priorities, business-unit plans, investment decisions, and delivery portfolios
- Reduces expenditure on poorly aligned or duplicative initiatives through explicit portfolio prioritisation and stop-or-continue decisions
- Improves executive decision quality by separating strategic leading indicators from routine operational reporting
- Establishes clearer ownership for benefits, measures, risks, dependencies, and escalation decisions across functions
- Accelerates strategy mobilisation through a practical 90-day plan, defined governance forums, and an agreed review cadence
Target competencies
Who should attend
- Vice Presidents of Strategy — who must convert enterprise strategy into an accountable execution system
- Corporate Strategy Directors — who coordinate strategic planning, portfolio choices, and executive performance reviews
- Heads of Strategic Planning — who need to connect annual planning outputs to multi-year delivery governance
- Transformation Directors — who lead enterprise change portfolios and must demonstrate benefits against strategic objectives
- Chief of Staff and Strategy Office Leaders — who prepare executive decision forums and track enterprise commitments
- Business Unit Strategy Leaders — who align divisional initiatives, investment cases, and performance measures with corporate priorities
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have several years of experience in corporate strategy, strategic planning, transformation, enterprise performance, or portfolio management, ideally with exposure to executive reporting and cross-functional initiatives. The course assumes familiarity with concepts such as strategic objectives, KPIs, business cases, budgets, organisational governance, and programme or project delivery. Participants should be comfortable interpreting performance data in Microsoft Excel and discussing strategic trade-offs with senior stakeholders. Prior use of Balanced Scorecard, Power BI, or formal portfolio-management tools is helpful but not required. No financial modelling qualification, project-management certification, coding ability, or specialist data-science background is required.
Training methodology
Instructor-led sessions introduce execution frameworks through senior-level examples of enterprise strategy, transformation portfolios, and performance failures. Participants work in small groups to diagnose a case organisation, construct a strategy map, select measures, score initiatives, and run an executive review meeting using performance evidence. Facilitated peer challenge tests the logic behind objectives, assumptions, investment choices, and governance design. Each day adds a component to an individual Strategy Execution Blueprint, culminating in an end-of-course application plan for the participant's own organisation or strategic remit.
