Course overview
Finance teams are expected to explain not only what happened in the numbers, but what could prevent the organisation from meeting its revenue, liquidity, margin, covenant, capital and reporting objectives. Many risk registers remain disconnected from budgeting, forecasting, investment appraisal and management reporting. This course addresses that gap by applying the COSO Enterprise Risk Management framework to finance decisions, controls and performance management.
Participants learn how to use COSO ERM’s five components and 20 principles to establish governance, define risk appetite, identify financial and operational risks, assess likelihood and impact, select responses, and monitor portfolio-level exposure. The course covers risk taxonomy design, inherent and residual risk scoring, key risk indicators, risk-and-control mapping, scenario analysis, stress testing, escalation thresholds and dashboard reporting. Participants practise linking risks to strategic objectives, financial plans and management actions rather than treating risk as a standalone compliance exercise.
Delivery combines instructor-led explanation with finance-focused cases, Excel-based risk analysis, facilitated workshops and peer review of risk decisions. Participants work through a simulated finance function facing cash-flow pressure, foreign-exchange volatility, customer concentration, control failures and forecast uncertainty. They leave with a practical COSO ERM implementation pack: a finance risk taxonomy, risk appetite statements, risk register, heat map, key risk indicator dashboard and a 90-day action plan for applying the method in their own organisation.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Apply the COSO ERM five-component model and 20 principles to finance governance and decision processes
- Define risk appetite statements and tolerance thresholds for liquidity, profitability, leverage and reporting risks
- Build a finance risk taxonomy that distinguishes strategic, operational, financial, compliance and reporting exposures
- Assess inherent and residual risk using likelihood-impact criteria, control effectiveness ratings and documented assumptions
- Construct a risk-and-control matrix linking finance risks to preventive, detective and corrective controls
- Design key risk indicators with thresholds, owners, data sources and escalation actions
- Perform scenario analysis and stress testing for cash flow, foreign exchange, credit and covenant risks
- Produce a COSO ERM implementation pack containing a risk register, heat map, dashboard and 90-day action plan
Benefits of attending
For you
- Gain a repeatable method for explaining how financial risks affect objectives, forecasts and management actions
- Build credibility in discussions with CFOs, auditors, risk committees and board-level stakeholders
- Create risk appetite and key risk indicator materials that can be used in finance governance meetings
- Strengthen capability to challenge assumptions in budgets, business cases and scenario models
- Develop a portfolio of COSO ERM work products to support progression into finance leadership, risk or control roles
For your organisation
- Connect finance risk management directly to planning, forecasting, capital allocation and performance reporting
- Improve consistency of risk assessment across treasury, financial reporting, credit, tax and FP&A activities
- Establish clearer risk appetite thresholds and escalation triggers for material financial exposures
- Reduce reliance on static risk registers by introducing indicators, scenario analysis and control-linked actions
- Provide management and audit committees with more defensible evidence of finance risk ownership and monitoring
Target competencies
Who should attend
- Finance Managers — who need to connect risk exposure to budgeting, forecasting and performance decisions
- Financial Controllers — who own financial reporting controls and require a structured view of residual risk
- Chief Financial Officers — who must set risk appetite and report material financial exposures to executives and boards
- FP&A Managers and Analysts — who need to incorporate scenarios, sensitivities and risk indicators into plans and forecasts
- Internal Audit Managers — who assess the design and operating effectiveness of enterprise risk management processes
- Risk and Compliance Officers — who need to align enterprise risk reporting with finance-owned risks and controls
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should be comfortable reading financial statements, budgets, forecasts and management reports, and should understand basic finance concepts such as cash flow, working capital, profitability, debt covenants and internal controls. Experience with a risk register, audit findings or control documentation is useful but not essential. Participants should be able to work with basic Excel formulas and tables; advanced modelling, Power BI development and statistical expertise are not required. This is suitable for professionals new to COSO ERM, provided they can relate risk discussions to real finance processes and decisions.
Training methodology
The course uses short instructor-led modules to introduce each COSO ERM component, followed by finance-specific application work. Participants analyse a continuing case involving forecast pressure, liquidity risk, foreign-exchange exposure and reporting-control failures. Workshops use Excel templates to score risks, test scenarios, map controls and define key risk indicators. Small groups compare risk responses and defend escalation decisions against stated appetite thresholds. On the final day, each participant adapts the course templates to a selected finance process and prepares a focused 90-day implementation plan.
