Facilities can be secure on paper yet remain vulnerable because entrances are poorly observed, boundaries are ambiguous, public and staff routes intersect, concealment opportunities go unnoticed, or maintenance conditions signal weak control. Security managers need a repeatable way to identify how site layout, lighting, access points, landscaping, signage and activity patterns affect theft, trespass, assault, vandalism and unauthorised access. This course equips participants to apply Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) as a practical facility-security method rather than treating it as an architectural concept alone.

Participants examine the core CPTED principles of natural surveillance, natural access control, territorial reinforcement, maintenance and activity support, then translate them into site-specific controls. They learn to conduct a CPTED security survey; map offender approaches, user journeys and sightlines; assess lighting, boundaries and entry controls; identify blind spots and conflict points; and prioritise improvements using risk-based decision criteria. The course also addresses how CPTED interacts with guards, CCTV, electronic access control, emergency egress, fire safety, accessibility and operational continuity.

Delivery combines instructor-led analysis with plan reviews, photographic evidence assessment, scenario-based risk workshops and team design critiques. Participants work from a realistic facility case and use structured survey checklists, observation records, annotated site plans and treatment registers. Requirements and prerequisites

Participants should have working familiarity with their organisation’s facility types, access arrangements and basic security controls such as locks, visitor management, CCTV, guarding or alarm systems. Experience conducting workplace inspections, risk assessments or facility walk-throughs is useful because exercises require participants to interpret plans, photographs and operational scenarios. Participants should be able to read simple floor plans or site layouts and make clear written observations. No architectural, policing or specialist crime-analysis qualification is required. The course does not require prior AutoCAD or QGIS expertise; templates and marked-up plans are used in class.

Training methodology

The instructor uses short technical briefings to establish CPTED principles, followed by guided analysis of plans, photographs and incident scenarios from workplaces and public-facing facilities. Participants conduct simulated site surveys, mark surveillance gaps and access routes on scaled plans, and test proposed controls against operational, safety and maintenance constraints. Small groups critique alternative treatments for the same vulnerability, using a risk-ranking register to justify decisions. The final session is an application-planning workshop in which each participant develops a CPTED assessment pack for a relevant facility or portfolio.

Day 2: Natural surveillance and environmental observation
