Course overview
Corporate affairs managers are expected to explain environmental, health, safety and social performance to audiences that do not share the same priorities: executives want material business implications, regulators want defensible disclosures, communities want evidence of local impact, and employees want clear commitments. Poorly governed CSR communications can create greenwashing allegations, contradict operational data, inflame stakeholder concerns, or leave a company unable to respond when an incident exposes the gap between stated commitments and practice.
This course develops the planning, governance and writing discipline needed to communicate sustainability and CSR performance credibly. Participants learn to map stakeholders and issues, apply materiality findings, translate EHS metrics into decision-useful narratives, build evidence trails for claims, align messages with GRI Standards, ESRS and IFRS sustainability disclosure requirements, and prepare communications for contentious issues such as emissions, safety performance, community impacts and supply-chain concerns. The course also addresses executive briefings, sustainability-report sections, media statements, employee communications and stakeholder-response protocols.
Delivered over five instructor-led days in a classroom or live online setting, the programme combines reporting-framework clinics, message-testing workshops, incident-response simulations and peer review of real-world-style communications. Participants work from an integrated case company and progressively build a CSR communications package. They leave with a stakeholder and material-issue map, claim substantiation register, message architecture, draft disclosure narrative, issues-response plan and 90-day implementation roadmap that can be adapted for their own corporate affairs function.
The course is designed for experienced corporate affairs, sustainability, communications and EHS professionals who already contribute to external reporting or stakeholder engagement and now need stronger control over the accuracy, consistency and strategic use of CSR communications.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Map priority stakeholders, influence routes and information needs using a stakeholder-materiality matrix
- Translate EHS, social and governance data into evidence-based CSR messages for defined audiences
- Build a claim substantiation register linking public statements to source data, owners and approvals
- Apply GRI Standards, ESRS and IFRS S1/S2 requirements to communication and disclosure planning
- Develop a corporate CSR message architecture with proof points, boundaries and prohibited claims
- Draft executive briefings, sustainability-report narratives and stakeholder responses from operational evidence

Target competencies
Who should attend
- Corporate Affairs Managers — who must coordinate credible sustainability narratives across leadership, operations and external stakeholders
- Sustainability Communications Managers — who turn ESG strategy, targets and performance data into public-facing communications
- ESG and Sustainability Managers — who need communications controls around disclosures, claims and stakeholder expectations
- EHS Managers — who provide environmental and safety performance data that must be accurately interpreted externally
- Investor Relations Managers — who need consistent sustainability messaging for investors, analysts and ratings agencies
- Public Affairs and External Communications Managers — who manage reputational exposure around community, regulatory and environmental issues
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have practical experience in corporate communications, sustainability, ESG, EHS, public affairs or stakeholder engagement, ideally including responsibility for reviewing reports, campaign content, executive communications or external statements. They should understand basic CSR and ESG terminology, including materiality, greenhouse-gas emissions, safety performance indicators and stakeholder engagement. Familiarity with an annual report, sustainability report or internal performance dashboard is useful. Participants should be comfortable working with tables and narrative evidence in Microsoft Excel and Word. Prior expertise in assurance, legal drafting, carbon accounting or formal GRI/ESRS reporting is not required; these concepts are introduced where needed.
Training methodology
The instructor uses short framework briefings followed by applied communications work around a realistic multinational case company. Participants analyse EHS data extracts, stakeholder feedback, draft disclosures and contested public claims; then test messages through executive, investor, community and media scenarios. Small groups build components of a CSR communications system and use structured peer-review checklists to identify vague boundaries, missing evidence and reputational risk. Each day adds to an individual capstone package, culminating in a facilitated action-planning session for transfer to the participant’s own reporting cycle and approval process.
