Course overview
Digital marketing teams often optimise channels in isolation: paid media is judged on click-through rate, email on opens, websites on conversion rate, and service teams on resolution time. This creates fragmented customer experiences, duplicated messages and missed moments where prospects abandon, hesitate or require reassurance. Customer journey mapping gives teams a shared method for connecting customer goals, behaviours, data, content, channels and operational ownership across the full path from first discovery to retention and advocacy.
This five-day course teaches participants to research, construct, validate and use journey maps for digital marketing decisions. Participants learn to define journey scope and personas; map stages, jobs, touchpoints, emotions and barriers; distinguish customer journeys from funnels and service blueprints; analyse GA4 and behavioural data; incorporate qualitative evidence; identify moments of truth; and prioritise improvements using impact, effort and confidence criteria. The course also covers content, messaging, measurement and experiment design at each journey stage.
Teaching combines instructor-led method demonstrations with a continuing case study and participant-led workshops. Teams build a working journey map in Miro, using evidence supplied through analytics, customer feedback and session-recording extracts. They leave with a documented current-state map, a prioritised opportunity backlog, measurement recommendations and a 90-day activation plan that can be adapted to their own product, service or campaign.
The course is designed for experienced marketers, digital product and customer-experience professionals who need to align channel activity with a demonstrable understanding of customer behaviour.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Define a journey-map scope, segment and decision context using a structured mapping brief
- Create evidence-based personas using behavioural, transactional and qualitative customer data
- Map stages, customer jobs, touchpoints, emotions, barriers and ownership in a current-state journey map
- Analyse GA4 path exploration and conversion data to identify drop-off points and high-value journeys
- Translate customer feedback and Hotjar behavioural evidence into validated journey-map insights
- Identify moments of truth and prioritise journey improvements with an impact-effort-confidence matrix
- Design stage-specific content, messaging, calls to action and channel interventions
- Produce a 90-day journey activation plan with KPIs, experiment hypotheses and accountable owners

- Marketing Strategists — who need an evidence-backed method for planning lifecycle and acquisition activity
- Product Marketing Managers — who must align product adoption messages with customer needs at each decision stage
- CRM and Lifecycle Marketing Specialists — who design triggered communications and retention programmes across the customer lifecycle
- Digital Product Managers — who need to connect website or app improvements to customer journey evidence and commercial outcomes
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have practical experience of digital marketing, web journeys, campaign planning, CRM, product management or customer experience. They should be comfortable interpreting basic measures such as traffic source, conversion rate, engagement, acquisition, retention and customer feedback. Familiarity with Google Analytics 4 reports or any web analytics platform is helpful, but advanced analysis is not assumed. Bring a laptop capable of accessing browser-based tools and, where permitted, a non-sensitive example of a customer journey to work on. No design qualification, coding knowledge, formal UX research training or prior journey-mapping experience is required.
Training methodology
The instructor models each mapping step before participants apply it to a shared digital-service case and, where appropriate, their own organisation. Short teaching sessions are followed by evidence-synthesis exercises using GA4 extracts, customer comments, survey results and Hotjar recordings. Teams build maps in Miro, compare assumptions with evidence, and facilitate cross-functional prioritisation discussions. Case critiques show why attractive maps can fail to drive action. On the final day, participants convert their map into a measurable 90-day activation plan and receive structured instructor feedback.
