Course overview

Unsafe conditions are often visible before an incident occurs, yet near misses, shortcuts and weak controls can become normalised when supervisors and workers lack a consistent way to intervene. This course addresses the practical gap between completing a safety walk and conducting a high-quality DuPont STOP observation: identifying at-risk behaviours and conditions, starting a respectful conversation, verifying controls and converting observations into prevention actions. Participants learn how to make safety observations credible rather than punitive, so reporting quality improves without discouraging workforce participation.

The course applies the DuPont STOP Safety Training Observation Program method to routine work in industrial, construction, maintenance, logistics and process environments. Participants practise planning observation routes, recognising behaviour-based and condition-based hazards, using the STOP observation sequence, asking effective coaching questions and documenting findings. They also learn to distinguish immediate correction from escalation, analyse observation data for repeat exposures, connect findings to risk assessments and ISO 45001 corrective-action processes, and measure whether observation activity is reducing risk rather than merely increasing report counts.

Instruction combines facilitated method demonstrations, realistic work scenarios, observation-form analysis, role-played field conversations and group reviews of anonymised trend data. Each participant develops a workplace STOP implementation pack containing an observation checklist, conversation prompts, escalation criteria, data fields, monthly dashboard measures and a 90-day deployment plan for a defined work area. This is a five-day instructor-led course available in classroom or live-online format, with a certificate issued on completion.

The programme is designed for professionals who already work within an occupational health and safety management system and need to strengthen frontline hazard recognition, supervisory coaching and preventive-action discipline.

Requirements and prerequisites

Frequently asked questions

No previous DuPont STOP course is required. Participants should already understand basic workplace safety concepts such as hazards, controls, risk assessments and corrective actions, because the course focuses on applying the observation method in operational settings.

A laptop is strongly recommended, particularly for the Microsoft Excel observation-data workshop and for completing the implementation pack. Live-online participants need reliable internet access, a webcam and a version of Excel capable of creating pivot tables.

It is best suited to HSE personnel, operations leaders, supervisors and safety representatives who influence day-to-day work practices. It is particularly relevant where safety walks are already performed but records, conversations or follow-up actions are inconsistent.
