Course overview
E-commerce tax compliance becomes difficult when a business sells through multiple storefronts, marketplaces and fulfilment locations while serving customers in several tax jurisdictions. VAT registration thresholds, US sales tax nexus, marketplace facilitator rules, tax-inclusive pricing, cross-border imports and product taxability can all change the amount charged to customers and reported to authorities. Errors commonly surface as under-collected tax, unreconciled marketplace settlements, delayed registrations, incorrect invoices or audit exposure. This course equips finance and tax professionals to build practical controls around these risks without disrupting online trading operations.
Participants examine the end-to-end tax lifecycle for direct-to-consumer and business-to-business e-commerce sales. They learn to determine VAT place-of-supply treatment, assess economic and physical nexus, manage registrations, classify products, configure tax engines, validate checkout tax calculation, reconcile transactional data and prepare VAT and sales tax returns. The course also addresses marketplace reporting, Import One-Stop Shop (IOSS), One-Stop Shop (OSS), exemption evidence, credit notes, refunds, foreign-currency records and audit-ready documentation.
Delivery combines instructor-led technical sessions with realistic multi-country trading scenarios and system-focused workshops. Participants work with sample order files, marketplace settlement reports, tax rate tables and exception logs to diagnose failures and design corrective controls. They leave with an e-commerce tax compliance playbook containing a nexus and registration assessment, data-field map, reconciliation workflow, filing calendar, control checklist and prioritised 90-day implementation plan for their own organisation.
The course is designed for professionals who already work with e-commerce transactions, indirect tax, financial reporting or online trading operations and need a structured method for turning tax rules into reliable operational processes.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

- Map order, customer, product, payment and fulfilment data fields required for VAT and sales tax determination
- Configure and test tax rules for product taxability, customer location, exemptions, shipping charges and tax-inclusive pricing
- Reconcile e-commerce platform orders, payment settlements, tax engine outputs and general ledger tax balances
- Prepare an indirect tax filing calendar covering returns, registrations, payment deadlines and evidence retention requirements

- E-Commerce Finance Managers — who reconcile platform revenue, tax liabilities and marketplace settlements
- Tax Accountants — who prepare returns and need reliable source data from digital commerce systems
- E-Commerce Operations Managers — who influence checkout, fulfilment and customer refund processes

- Marketplace and Digital Commerce Managers — who need to understand facilitator rules and seller tax responsibilities
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should understand basic accounting entries, sales invoices, credit notes and the distinction between revenue and tax collected on behalf of an authority. Experience with an e-commerce platform, ERP, marketplace seller account or indirect tax return is useful because exercises use order-level data, settlement reports and reconciliation logic. Participants should be comfortable working in Excel or similar spreadsheet software, including filters and simple formulas. Prior specialist knowledge of US state sales tax, EU VAT law, tax-engine configuration or customs declarations is not required; the course explains these concepts before applying them to practical cases.
Training methodology
The programme uses instructor-led explanations of VAT and sales tax rules followed immediately by transaction-based application. Participants analyse sample Shopify orders, marketplace settlement statements, product tax codes, fulfilment-location data and tax-engine exception reports. Small groups resolve cases involving cross-border sales, refunds, exemptions and registration thresholds, then compare their decisions against a documented control framework. Each day closes with a practical output that feeds into the final e-commerce tax compliance playbook. The final session includes peer review and individual implementation planning for participants' own trading model.
