Course overview
Project financial reports often show spend against budget but fail to explain whether the work completed justifies that spend or whether the approved budget at completion remains credible. Earned Value Management (EVM) links scope, schedule and cost so project teams can distinguish a temporary variance from a forecast problem. This course equips finance and project professionals to produce defensible project-control information for sponsors, programme boards and clients, rather than relying on percentage-complete estimates or retrospective cost reports.
Participants learn to establish a performance measurement baseline, define control accounts and work packages, assign budgets, and select objective earned-value techniques. They calculate planned value (PV), earned value (EV), actual cost (AC), cost and schedule variances, cost and schedule performance indices, estimate at completion (EAC), estimate to complete (ETC) and variance at completion (VAC). The course also covers forecast selection, data-quality checks, variance analysis, management thresholds and corrective-action reporting aligned to ANSI/EIA-748 principles.
Delivery combines instructor explanation with spreadsheet modelling, worked calculations and a five-day project case. Participants build an EVM control workbook for a realistic capital project, including a baseline, monthly performance dataset, variance narrative, EAC forecast and management dashboard. They leave with a reusable reporting structure and an application plan for introducing or strengthening EVM controls in their own project environment.
The course is suited to professionals who prepare, challenge or use project financial information, from project accountants and cost controllers to project managers, PMO analysts and finance business partners.

Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should be comfortable reading a project budget, a basic schedule and a cost report, and should understand simple percentage calculations and spreadsheet formulas. Familiarity with common project terms such as work breakdown structure, milestone, actual cost, forecast and budget is helpful. Participants should bring experience from a project, programme or finance environment so they can relate the methods to live reporting decisions. Microsoft Excel access is recommended for exercises. Prior EVM experience, advanced accounting qualifications, Microsoft Project expertise and specialist scheduling software are not required; complete beginners should expect a calculation-focused introduction before progressing to forecast analysis.
Training methodology
The instructor develops each EVM method from a project-control scenario, then participants apply it in Excel using a continuing capital-project case. Short demonstrations cover baseline loading, progress measurement, variance formulas and forecast logic; guided exercises require participants to calculate and interpret the results. Small-group reviews test competing explanations for adverse variances and draft corrective actions for a project board. Each participant completes a final application plan that identifies the data sources, reporting cycle, thresholds and governance changes needed in their own organisation.

Workshop: Using a monthly project dataset, participants calculate PV, EV, AC, CV, SV, CPI and SPI in an Excel performance report.
Day 3: Forecasting final cost and schedule outcomes
