Course overview
Construction projects operate under permits, planning conditions, client environmental requirements and community scrutiny, yet environmental controls often fail at the workface. Unmanaged runoff, dust, waste segregation, fuel storage, contaminated soil and protected-species constraints can stop work, trigger enforcement action, damage client relationships and create expensive rework. This course equips construction professionals to convert environmental commitments into site controls that supervisors, subcontractors and plant operators can apply and verify.
Participants learn to build and manage a Construction Environmental Management Plan (CEMP) aligned with ISO 14001 principles and project obligations. The course covers environmental aspect-and-impact assessment, legal and permit registers, method-statement controls, erosion and sediment management, waste duty-of-care records, pollution prevention, ecological protection, monitoring plans, inspections, incident investigation and corrective-action tracking. Participants practise selecting proportionate controls, assigning responsibilities and using evidence to demonstrate compliance to clients, regulators and auditors.
Delivery combines instructor-led technical sessions with construction case studies, document reviews and site-scenario workshops. Participants work through a live-style project from mobilisation to handover, including a spill response, a drainage-risk assessment and an environmental inspection. They leave with a tailored CEMP action pack containing an aspect-impact register, inspection checklist, monitoring schedule, incident workflow and 90-day implementation plan that can be adapted for their own project.
The course is designed for intermediate practitioners who already work around construction delivery and need stronger ownership of environmental performance. It is particularly valuable where teams manage multiple subcontractors, operate near sensitive receptors, or must demonstrate reliable environmental assurance to public-sector, infrastructure or major-client stakeholders.

Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have practical familiarity with construction project stages, site documentation and routine HSE controls, gained through work on site or in project support. The course assumes that attendees can read drawings, method statements, risk assessments and basic programme information, and understand terms such as subcontractor, permit, inspection and corrective action. Prior environmental management training or ISO 14001 auditor certification is not required. Participants do not need specialist ecology, contaminated-land or environmental-law qualifications; these technical topics are addressed from the perspective of construction management and control selection.
Training methodology
The instructor uses construction programmes, drawings, method statements, permit conditions and inspection evidence to anchor each topic in project delivery. Short technical inputs are followed by hands-on work: participants score aspects and impacts, draft CEMP sections, select drainage and storage controls, review subcontractor records and investigate a simulated pollution event. Teams test decisions against a changing site scenario involving earthworks, protected receptors and programme pressure. The final session is an application-planning workshop in which each participant prioritises actions, owners and evidence requirements for a current or upcoming project.
Course outline
Day 1: Environmental governance and project planning
- Construction environmental risks across mobilisation, delivery and handover
- ISO 14001 environmental management system principles for project teams
- Planning conditions, permits, consent limits and client environmental requirements
- Construction Environmental Management Plan structure and document-control arrangements
- Environmental roles, competence matrices and subcontractor responsibilities
- Environmental aspect-and-impact identification for construction activities
- Significance scoring using likelihood, consequence, receptor sensitivity and control effectiveness
Workshop: Participants build an aspect-and-impact register for a proposed earthworks and drainage package and identify the highest-priority CEMP controls.
Day 2: Workface pollution prevention controls
- Erosion and sediment control planning for exposed ground and dewatering
- Surface-water protection, drainage mapping and discharge-point management
- Fuel, oil and chemical storage using bunding, transfer controls and spill readiness
- Dust and air-emissions controls for demolition, haul roads and material handling
- Noise, vibration and community nuisance management near sensitive receptors
- Concrete washout, wheel-wash and vehicle-maintenance pollution controls
- Environmental method statements and toolbox-talk instructions for operatives
Workshop: Using a site layout and forecast rainfall event, participants produce a drainage-risk map and a prioritised pollution-prevention action list.
Day 3: Materials, waste and sensitive-site management

- Excavated materials management, soil stockpiling and reuse decision points

Workshop: Participants review a mixed-waste and surplus-soil scenario, then prepare a compliant materials-routing and waste-evidence plan.
Day 4: Monitoring, assurance and incident response
