Course overview

Manufacturing facilities face environmental exposure at the point where production decisions become emissions, waste, wastewater, chemical use and permit obligations. A change to a coating line, cleaning solvent, furnace, packaging material or maintenance practice can affect air limits, hazardous-waste classification, discharge quality and community complaints. Environmental responsibilities are often spread across operations, engineering, maintenance, EHS and purchasing, making missed inspections, incomplete records and uncontrolled process changes more likely. This course equips participants to turn environmental requirements into routine plant controls that support production without treating compliance as a separate paperwork exercise.

Participants learn how to build and operate an environmental management system for a manufacturing site using ISO 14001 principles. They identify significant aspects and impacts; create legal and permit obligation registers; map emission, waste and wastewater sources; establish operational controls; and define monitoring, inspection and corrective-action routines. Practical sessions cover hazardous-waste determination, waste-storage controls, spill preparedness, environmental KPIs, internal audit planning, root-cause analysis and management review reporting. Participants also learn to connect environmental objectives with energy, water, material-loss and cost-reduction opportunities.

The programme is delivered through instructor-led technical sessions, plant-based scenarios, document reviews and team workshops using realistic manufacturing records. Requirements and prerequisites

This is a foundation-to-intermediate course and does not require prior ISO 14001 certification or formal environmental qualifications. Participants should have basic familiarity with their facility’s production processes, such as raw-material handling, utilities, maintenance, waste collection or quality controls. Experience reading simple procedures, inspection forms and process-flow diagrams will be useful. A complete beginner can attend and should expect a structured introduction to environmental aspects, permits, waste controls and management-system documents. No specialist software, environmental sampling experience, legal training or prior audit experience is required.

Training methodology

Instructor-led sessions explain the environmental management methods used in manufacturing plants, followed by guided application to a simulated facility. Participants review process maps, safety data sheets, waste manifests, inspection records, permit conditions and incident reports to make practical decisions. Small-group workshops build an aspects register, compliance calendar, operational controls and audit checklist. Case studies examine a solvent-release event, wastewater exceedance and waste-storage finding. The final application-planning session converts each participant’s learning into a prioritised 90-day action plan for their own site.
