Course overview
Workplace environmental compliance often fails in routine operations rather than major incidents: waste is misclassified, chemical storage inspections are inconsistent, permit conditions are not translated into work instructions, and records cannot demonstrate control during an audit. This course gives environmental, facilities, operations and HSE professionals a structured way to identify their organisation’s environmental obligations, assess operational impacts, assign controls and maintain defensible evidence. It is designed for people who need to contribute confidently to an environmental management system (EMS) without yet leading a full ISO 14001 implementation.
Participants examine the practical building blocks of workplace environmental management: legal and other requirements registers, aspects and impacts assessment, compliance obligations, operational controls, emergency preparedness, monitoring plans, internal audits and corrective action. They learn how to score significance using a risk-based matrix, connect controls to identified aspects, define measurable environmental objectives and build inspection checklists that produce usable evidence. The course also explains how ISO 14001:2015 requirements translate into day-to-day activities across waste management, emissions, water use, hazardous substances, contractors and site maintenance.
Instruction combines worked examples, facilitated discussions and realistic site-based exercises. Participants use templates to develop an aspects-and-impacts register, compliance obligations matrix, operational control checklist and corrective-action record. The final application workshop brings these documents together into an Environmental Compliance Action Plan for a selected workplace, department or operational scenario. This practical portfolio gives participants a credible starting point for improving local controls, preparing for internal audits and briefing managers on priority environmental risks. Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should understand basic workplace processes such as waste handling, chemical use, maintenance activities, purchasing or contractor supervision, and should be able to work with simple tables in Microsoft Excel. Familiarity with their organisation’s HSE policy, incident reporting process or inspection forms will help, but prior environmental-management training is not required. This is a fundamentals course for professionals with some workplace responsibility rather than environmental specialists. Participants do not need prior ISO 14001 audit experience, formal legal training, environmental science qualifications or specialist emissions-monitoring software.
Training methodology
The instructor uses short, focused teaching sessions to introduce EMS concepts, then moves participants into applied workplace scenarios involving waste storage, chemical handling, utility use and contractor controls. Teams assess aspects and impacts, interpret sample permit and legal-register entries, test inspection checklists and review simulated audit evidence. Facilitated debriefs compare control options and evidence quality. On the final day, each participant converts the course templates into an Environmental Compliance Action Plan for a real or representative work area, with peer review and instructor feedback.

Day 1: Environmental management and compliance foundations

Workshop: Participants map a representative site process and produce an initial list of environmental aspects, impacts and responsible functions.
Day 2: Assessing aspects and planning controls

Day 3: Compliance controls, monitoring and emergency readiness
