Course overview
Facilities managers are often accountable for environmental performance without owning every operational process that creates risk. Plant rooms, waste compounds, cleaning contracts, refrigerant systems, drainage, fuel storage, construction work and tenant activities can all create compliance exposure, pollution incidents and avoidable cost. This course equips facilities leaders to identify where environmental controls are weak, prioritise action using risk evidence, and demonstrate that controls are operating across single sites, portfolios and outsourced services.
Participants learn to build an environmental risk-control system around ISO 14001 principles and practical facilities operations. They assess environmental aspects and impacts, develop legal and other-requirements registers, map control points, evaluate contractor competence, manage waste and hazardous substances, plan spill prevention, and set meaningful environmental performance indicators. The course also addresses audit preparation, corrective-action management, environmental incident investigation, carbon and resource data quality, and management review reporting.
Delivery combines instructor-led technical sessions with facility-based case studies, risk-ranking workshops, contractor-control exercises and audit simulations. Participants work from a realistic multi-site facilities scenario and leave with a completed Environmental Risk Control Plan: an aspect-and-impact register, prioritised control matrix, inspection schedule, incident-response actions and 90-day implementation roadmap that can be adapted for their own estate.
The programme is designed for experienced facilities professionals who need to move beyond routine compliance checks and take a defensible role in environmental governance, operational assurance and improvement planning.

Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have practical experience of facilities operations, building maintenance, workplace services, estates management or HSE coordination. They should be familiar with routine site documentation such as risk assessments, contractor method statements, maintenance records, waste transfer notes and incident reports. A working awareness of environmental topics such as waste segregation, chemical storage, energy use or spill response is assumed. Participants should be able to use Excel or an equivalent spreadsheet for simple registers and action tracking. Prior ISO 14001 auditor training, environmental science qualifications, carbon-accounting expertise and specialist software access are not required.
Training methodology
The instructor uses short technical briefings to establish the control framework, then moves participants through a realistic facilities portfolio case involving waste storage, drainage, refrigerants, cleaning chemicals and outsourced maintenance. Teams build registers, score risks, inspect evidence packs, test a spill scenario and write corrective actions against simulated audit findings. Facilitated peer review compares control decisions and escalation thresholds. On the final day, each participant turns the case learning into a site or portfolio implementation plan, with priorities, owners, evidence requirements and review dates.

Day 1: Environmental governance and risk prioritisation

Day 2: Operational controls for facilities environmental risks

- Hazardous-waste storage, labelling, consignment documentation and contractor handover
- Chemical inventory control, safety data sheet review and secondary-containment requirements
- Drainage plans, interceptors, trade-effluent risks and pollution pathways

Day 3: Contractor assurance and pollution incident readiness
