Course overview

Construction project controls depend on consistent data across cost, schedule, commitments, progress, change and forecasting. Yet many projects still rely on disconnected spreadsheets, late cost extracts and manual reconciliation between site teams, commercial teams and finance. This creates avoidable disputes over committed cost, earned value, forecast final cost and the status of approved changes. This course addresses the practical challenge of configuring, using and governing ERP-driven controls information so managers can act on reliable project data rather than retrospective reports.

Participants examine how construction ERP platforms connect work breakdown structures, cost codes, budgets, purchase orders, subcontract commitments, invoices, timesheets, equipment costs and change events. They learn to map project-control requirements into SAP S/4HANA and Oracle Primavera Unifier workflows, integrate schedule data from Oracle Primavera P6, and build management reporting in Microsoft Power BI. The course develops concrete skills in cost-structure design, baseline control, commitment tracking, progress measurement, earned value analysis, change management, forecast-to-complete calculations and data-quality checks.

Teaching combines instructor-led demonstrations with a continuing construction case involving a live multi-package project. Participants work through cost-code mapping, budget loading, procurement commitments, approved and pending variations, schedule updates and forecast reporting. By the final day, each participant produces an ERP Project Controls Operating Blueprint: a practical pack containing a data-flow map, controls calendar, reporting specification, exception rules and implementation priorities for their own organisation. Participants receive a certificate on completion.

Requirements and prerequisites

Participants should have practical experience of construction projects and understand basic project-control concepts, including budgets, cost codes, commitments, actual cost, change control and monthly reporting. Familiarity with either SAP, Oracle Primavera Unifier, another construction ERP platform, or Oracle Primavera P6 is useful, but expert system administration is not assumed. Participants should be comfortable working with Excel-style tables and interpreting simple cost reports. No programming, database administration, Power BI development experience or prior ERP configuration certification is required. The course explains the system logic before applying it to construction controls.

Training methodology

The course uses short instructor-led explanations followed by system-oriented workshops based on a construction project case. Participants interpret SAP S/4HANA-style cost and commitment records, map Primavera P6 schedule data to control accounts, configure Primavera Unifier workflow scenarios and develop Power BI reporting requirements. Group reviews test decisions on accruals, pending variations, progress claims and forecast exceptions. Day 1: Construction ERP controls architecture

Day 2: Cost, commitment and procurement control

  • Goods receipt, service entry and invoice matching
  • Accruals, uninvoiced liabilities and period-end cut-off

Workshop: Participants reconcile a project cost report containing purchase orders, subcontract commitments, invoices, accruals and budget transfers, then document the exceptions.

Day 3: Schedule, progress and earned value integration

  • Physical progress, quantity-based progress and milestone weighting
  • Planned value, earned value and actual cost calculations
  • Cost performance index and schedule performance index interpretation

Workshop: Participants connect a P6 progress update to control-account costs and produce an earned value and estimate-at-completion analysis.

Day 4: Change, risk and management reporting

  • Change-event registers and potential change order workflows

  • Time-and-material event capture and audit evidence
  • Risk allowances, contingency drawdown and management reserve
  • Cash-flow forecasting from commitments and payment terms
  • Power BI data model requirements for project-controls dashboards

Workshop: Participants design a change-control workflow and specify a Power BI dashboard for variations, contingency, commitments and cash exposure.

Day 5: ERP controls operating model and implementation

Frequently asked questions

You should understand construction budgets, commitments, actual costs and change control, and have used project cost reports or planning data. Experience with SAP, Primavera Unifier or Primavera P6 is helpful but not essential; the course does not assume system-administration expertise.
