Course overview
Retail inventory teams are expected to maintain availability without tying up cash in excess stock, while merchandising teams need reliable product, price, promotion and supplier data to make profitable decisions. ERP systems sit at the centre of these processes, but value is lost when replenishment parameters, item hierarchies, purchase orders, stock transfers and sales data are configured or interpreted in isolation. This course addresses the operational gap between ERP transactions and the retail outcomes they are meant to support: fewer stock-outs, lower markdown exposure, cleaner inventory records and faster action on exceptions.
Participants learn how retail merchandising and inventory processes are represented in an ERP environment, from item master and supplier set-up through assortment planning, purchase orders, goods receipt, allocation, replenishment, transfers, returns and stock adjustments. They work with retail KPIs including sell-through, stock turn, weeks of supply, gross margin return on inventory investment (GMROI), fill rate and inventory ageing. The course also covers ERP controls, master-data governance, integration points with POS and warehouse systems, and practical reporting techniques for diagnosing inventory discrepancies and demand-versus-supply exceptions.
Delivered over five instructor-led days in a classroom or live online setting, the programme combines guided system-process walkthroughs, retail case data, Excel-based analysis and structured workshops. Participants complete a capstone retail inventory improvement pack containing an item and hierarchy design, replenishment parameter recommendations, an exception-report specification, KPI calculations and a 90-day implementation plan. This tangible deliverable can be adapted for use in their own category, store estate or supply chain function.
The course is designed for intermediate retail professionals who already work with merchandise, inventory, supply or ERP data and need to translate system capability into disciplined day-to-day retail decisions. Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have at least six months of experience in retail merchandising, inventory control, replenishment, buying, supply chain operations or ERP support. They should understand basic retail terms such as SKU, purchase order, goods receipt, stock on hand, sell-through, lead time and store transfer, and be comfortable using spreadsheets for sorting, filtering and simple formulas. Familiarity with any ERP, POS, warehouse management or retail planning system is useful but not mandatory. Prior SAP or Oracle certification, programming, database administration and advanced statistics are not required.
Training methodology
The instructor uses a retail trading case that follows seasonal products from item creation and purchase order through warehouse receipt, store allocation, point-of-sale sales, returns and markdowns. Short taught modules establish the process and control concepts, followed by hands-on exercises using ERP-style transaction scenarios and Excel data extracts. Participants work in groups to resolve stock and replenishment exceptions, defend parameter choices and define report requirements. Each day adds artefacts to an individual capstone pack, culminating in a peer-reviewed 90-day implementation plan.
