Course overview
Banks face growing scrutiny over financed emissions, climate-risk disclosures, green product claims, community investment, workforce practices, and the social effects of lending decisions. Reporting teams must translate data from credit, risk, finance, HR, procurement, and sustainability functions into disclosures that are consistent, traceable, and suitable for assurance. This course addresses the practical challenge of producing ESG and CSR reports that meet investor, regulator, customer, and board expectations without relying on unsupported narratives or disconnected data.
Participants examine the reporting standards and banking-specific methods used to define material topics, establish reporting boundaries, calculate financed emissions, document social and governance indicators, and draft decision-useful disclosures. They work with IFRS S1 and S2, ESRS, GRI Standards, and the PCAF Standard, learning how to map metrics to source systems, assess data quality, build a reporting evidence trail, and distinguish mandatory disclosures from voluntary CSR communication. The programme also covers climate transition plans, taxonomy-aligned activities, human rights considerations in lending, and controls over ESG claims.
The five days combine instructor-led technical sessions with worked banking cases, data-mapping exercises, peer review, and reporting workshops. Each participant develops a bank ESG reporting pack: a materiality and stakeholder map, metric dictionary, data-owner matrix, financed-emissions calculation worksheet, disclosure cross-reference, and assurance-ready evidence plan. This practical pack can be adapted for the participant’s institution immediately after the course.
The course is designed for banking professionals who already contribute to sustainability, risk, finance, governance, reporting, credit, or investor communications and need a structured method for producing credible ESG and CSR disclosures.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Map banking ESG and CSR reporting requirements across IFRS S1, IFRS S2, ESRS, GRI Standards, and PCAF
- Conduct a double-materiality assessment using stakeholder evidence, impact criteria, and financial-risk thresholds
- Define organisational, operational, and financed-emissions reporting boundaries for a banking group
- Calculate financed emissions for selected lending and investment portfolios using the PCAF data-quality hierarchy
- Build a banking ESG metric dictionary linking disclosure indicators to source systems, owners, controls, and evidence
- Draft climate-risk, transition-plan, social-impact, and governance disclosures with traceable supporting evidence
- Assess ESG data quality through completeness, accuracy, timeliness, lineage, and control testing
- Produce an assurance-ready ESG reporting pack and implementation roadmap for a bank
Benefits of attending
For you
- Gain the ability to lead a bank ESG reporting workstream using recognised reporting standards
- Build confidence in challenging weak financed-emissions data and unsupported sustainability claims
- Create a practical portfolio of reporting artefacts for use in sustainability, risk, or disclosure roles
- Strengthen credibility with finance, risk, audit, and investor-relations stakeholders through shared reporting language
- Prepare for expanded responsibilities in climate disclosure, sustainable finance, and ESG assurance readiness
For your organisation
- Establish a clearer ownership model for ESG metrics across finance, risk, credit, HR, and sustainability teams
- Reduce reporting risk by improving data lineage, evidence retention, and disclosure review controls
- Produce more consistent financed-emissions and sector-exposure reporting across portfolios and business units
- Improve board and investor decision-making with material, comparable, and traceable ESG information
- Limit greenwashing and reputational exposure through disciplined review of CSR and sustainable-finance claims
Target competencies
Who should attend
- Sustainability and ESG Managers — who coordinate bank-wide reporting inputs and need defensible disclosures
- Financial Reporting and Disclosure Managers — who must integrate sustainability information with annual-report governance
- Climate Risk and Enterprise Risk Managers — who translate climate scenarios and risk assessments into reportable information
- Credit Risk and Portfolio Managers — who need to understand financed-emissions and sector exposure reporting
- Investor Relations and Corporate Communications Managers — who must communicate ESG performance without overstating claims
- Internal Audit, Compliance and Assurance Professionals — who review ESG controls, evidence trails, and reporting reliability
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have working familiarity with how a bank is organised and how lending, investment, risk, finance, or sustainability data is produced. Prior exposure to ESG terminology, greenhouse-gas concepts, annual reporting, or regulatory disclosures is helpful, as the course moves quickly into banking reporting decisions rather than basic sustainability awareness. Participants should be comfortable reading tables, using spreadsheets, and discussing data ownership and controls. No prior PCAF calculation experience, assurance qualification, programming skill, climate-modelling expertise, or specialist ESG reporting software is required. Templates and worked calculation examples are provided.
Training methodology
The course uses short instructor-led briefings to explain reporting requirements, followed by banking-specific workshops that apply them. Participants analyse a fictional bank’s lending portfolio, climate-risk narrative, HR indicators, community-investment data, and sustainable-finance claims. In groups, they map disclosures to IFRS S1/S2, ESRS, GRI, and PCAF requirements; test data quality; and review draft statements for evidence and overclaiming. Daily outputs are assembled into an individual reporting pack, culminating in a facilitated action-planning session for implementation in each participant’s institution.
