Course overview

New senior leaders are expected to make enterprise-level decisions before they have fully adjusted from managing a function, project, or department. They must translate board priorities into execution, challenge weak assumptions, allocate scarce resources, manage competing stakeholders, and communicate decisions with authority. Without a practical management system, leaders can become absorbed in operational escalation, receive inconsistent performance information, and struggle to distinguish urgent issues from strategic risks.

This five-day Executive Management Essentials course establishes the core disciplines required to lead at senior-management level. Participants learn to define strategic priorities, set decision rights, build an executive performance dashboard, interpret financial and operational indicators, use scenario planning, maintain a risk register, and structure concise executive communications. The course covers OKRs, Balanced Scorecard measures, RACI and RAPID decision models, stakeholder mapping, business-case evaluation, governance routines, and board-style reporting. Participants practise turning ambiguous organisational issues into clear choices, accountable actions, and measurable outcomes.

Delivery combines instructor-led briefings with executive case studies, facilitated peer challenge, spreadsheet-based analysis, dashboard review, and leadership simulations. Each participant works on a current business issue or a supplied executive case, progressively building an Executive Management Action Pack: a strategic priority map, stakeholder plan, decision-rights model, performance scorecard, risk register, and 90-day execution plan. The course is available in classroom or live online format and includes a certificate on completion.

Who should attend

  • Newly appointed Senior Managers — who must move from functional delivery to enterprise-wide accountability
  • Heads of Department — who need to align multiple teams, budgets, and priorities behind strategic goals
  • Directors and Associate Directors — who present recommendations to executive committees and boards
  • General Managers — who balance operational performance with longer-term commercial and organisational decisions
  • Functional Leaders — who need clearer decision rights and cross-functional stakeholder alignment
  • High-potential Managers — who are preparing for a first senior leadership or executive-management role

Requirements and prerequisites

Participants should have experience managing a team, function, programme, or budget and should be familiar with routine business reporting, such as departmental KPIs, budget-versus-actual figures, and operational plans. Confidence reading basic tables and charts is assumed. Participants should bring a current management challenge, strategic initiative, or performance issue where possible. No prior executive title, MBA, accounting qualification, Power BI expertise, or formal strategy certification is required. The course explains the financial, governance, and performance-management methods used, but it is not designed for people with no management experience.

Training methodology

The course uses short instructor-led modules to introduce each executive management discipline, followed by application to a realistic multi-business-unit case and participants’ own work context. Teams analyse a performance dashboard in Microsoft Power BI, test a strategic investment case in Microsoft Excel, assign decision rights, and rehearse an executive review meeting. Facilitated peer challenge is used to test assumptions and strengthen recommendations. Each day adds a component to the final Executive Management Action Pack, culminating in a 90-day implementation plan and an executive decision-paper presentation.

Frequently asked questions

You should already have experience managing people, a function, a programme, or a budget. The course is designed for professionals moving into senior-management responsibility, not for first-time supervisors with no management background.

No formal finance, MBA, or strategy qualification is required. You will work with practical management-account concepts, investment measures, scorecards, and decision tools, with guidance on how to use them in senior-leadership discussions.

A laptop is strongly recommended for live online delivery and useful in the classroom for completing templates and spreadsheet exercises. Exercises use Microsoft Excel, Power BI examples, and Microsoft PowerPoint-style executive reporting; advanced software skills are not expected.

This course focuses on the management system required at senior level: strategy execution, financial judgement, decision rights, governance, risk, performance dashboards, and executive communication. It does not concentrate primarily on coaching conversations, team motivation, or supervisory techniques.

Participants apply the methods to a current business issue or a realistic executive case throughout the week. The resulting priority map, scorecard, risk register, decision paper, and 90-day plan can be adapted directly for use with their manager or leadership team.

You leave with an Executive Management Action Pack containing practical templates and completed work: a strategy map, KPI scorecard, stakeholder plan, decision-rights model, investment analysis, risk register, executive decision paper, and 90-day execution plan. You also receive a certificate on completion.
