Yet many operational reports show only historical spend, making it difficult to distinguish a temporary variance from a structural profitability problem. This course equips managers to turn operational data into financially defensible decisions, explain trade-offs to finance teams, and take corrective action before performance gaps widen.

Participants learn how the income statement, balance sheet and cash flow statement connect to operational activity. They build operating budgets, analyse actual-versus-budget variances, calculate unit costs and contribution margins, assess working-capital implications, and evaluate investment proposals using payback period, net present value and internal rate of return. The course also addresses cost allocation, capacity utilisation, inventory carrying costs, break-even analysis, forecasting, and financial drivers in service and manufacturing operations.

Delivery combines instructor-led financial modelling sessions with realistic operational case studies, including a production variance review, inventory reduction decision and capital-equipment business case. A laptop with Microsoft Excel is strongly recommended for the modelling exercises and templates. Power BI examples are demonstrated and may be used in guided activities, but prior Power BI experience is not required.
