Course overview
Finance business partners are expected to do more than report last month’s numbers. They must explain what changed, test the commercial assumptions behind plans, challenge operational leaders constructively, and turn financial evidence into decisions on pricing, capacity, investment, cost control and performance. This course addresses the gap between technical accounting knowledge and the practical financial management required to influence business outcomes. Participants learn to move from data provider to trusted adviser while maintaining control, accuracy and financial discipline.
Across five days, participants work through the financial management cycle used by effective finance business partners: interpreting financial statements, building driver-based budgets and forecasts, analysing variances, assessing investment proposals, managing working capital and communicating performance to non-finance stakeholders. They practise Excel-based modelling, rolling forecasts, scenario analysis, contribution and break-even analysis, KPI design, and business-case evaluation using NPV, IRR and payback. The course also examines how IFRS-based reporting, management accounting and operational data should be combined for decision support.
Teaching is built around a continuing business unit case in which participants act as finance partners to a divisional leadership team. Instructor-led explanations are followed by model-building exercises, management-review simulations and peer challenge sessions. Each participant leaves with a finance business partnering action plan and a practical performance pack containing a driver tree, budget and forecast model, variance commentary, investment appraisal and stakeholder-ready management dashboard.
The course is suited to finance professionals who support operational, commercial or functional leaders and need stronger command of management accounting, planning and influential financial communication. It is equally valuable for managers approving development budgets because the work products can be adapted directly to live planning, review and decision-making processes.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Interpret income statements, balance sheets and cash flow statements to identify business performance drivers
- Build a driver-based budget and rolling forecast model in Microsoft Excel
- Perform price, volume, mix, cost and operational variance analysis with management commentary
- Evaluate capital investment proposals using NPV, IRR, payback and sensitivity analysis
- Construct contribution, break-even and margin analyses for commercial decisions
- Design KPI dashboards and driver trees that connect operational activity to financial outcomes
- Challenge business assumptions using scenario modelling and evidence-based questioning
- Present a stakeholder-ready financial performance pack with clear recommendations
Benefits of attending
For you
- Produce financial commentary that explains root causes and recommended actions rather than restating variances
- Build credible planning and scenario models for conversations with operational and commercial leaders
- Gain practical confidence in challenging assumptions on volume, pricing, costs and investment returns

- Strengthen investment governance with consistent NPV, IRR, payback and sensitivity assessments
- Give business leaders clearer KPI dashboards and financial narratives for faster corrective action
- Increase the quality of finance challenge in budgeting and performance-review meetings without weakening stakeholder relationships
Target competencies
Who should attend
- Finance Business Partners — who need to influence operational decisions with robust financial analysis
- Commercial Finance Analysts — who support pricing, margin, sales and customer profitability decisions
- Management Accountants — who want to strengthen planning, forecasting and stakeholder-facing capability
- FP&A Analysts — who prepare budgets and forecasts and need to explain performance drivers to leaders
- Senior Financial Analysts — who need to translate financial models into actionable management recommendations
- Operational Managers with finance responsibility — who must use budgets, KPIs and investment cases to run their areas
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should be comfortable with basic financial terminology, including revenue, gross margin, operating cost, profit, budget, forecast and variance. They should be able to read a simple profit and loss statement and use Microsoft Excel for formulas, sorting, filtering and basic charts. Some exposure to monthly reporting, budgeting or business performance reviews is useful, whether in finance or an operational role. Prior experience with Power BI, SAP S/4HANA, investment appraisal or IFRS is not required; these are introduced in the context of finance business partnering. Complete beginners in finance should expect a demanding foundation in core concepts before progressing to applied analysis.
Training methodology
The instructor uses short, applied teaching blocks to establish each financial management method, then moves participants into Excel modelling, worked calculations and facilitated business-partner conversations. A single divisional case runs through the week: teams receive financial statements, operational metrics, forecast assumptions and investment options, then prepare responses for a leadership review. Exercises include building a driver tree, diagnosing variances, testing scenarios and presenting recommendations. Peer feedback focuses on analytical rigour, clarity of challenge and usefulness to decision makers. The final session converts the case learning into an individual workplace application plan.
