Course overview

Chief financial officers are expected to protect liquidity, earnings quality and enterprise value while making decisions at the pace of operations. That requires more than reviewing a risk register or receiving periodic audit reports. CFOs must determine which exposures can materially affect cash flow, covenants, forecasts, capital allocation and financial reporting; challenge management assumptions; and present a defensible risk position to the board, lenders and investors. This course addresses the practical oversight gap between risk information generated by the business and the financial decisions for which the CFO is accountable.

Participants learn to build a finance-led risk oversight approach that connects enterprise risks to financial statements, treasury exposures and strategic plans. The programme covers COSO ERM and ISO 31000 principles, risk appetite and tolerance setting, risk-adjusted forecasting, liquidity stress testing, covenant headroom analysis, foreign exchange and interest-rate exposure assessment, counterparty risk, fraud indicators, and control assurance. Participants use heat maps, key risk indicators, scenario models, risk-adjusted dashboards and board reporting formats to turn uncertain events into measurable financial decisions.

Delivery combines instructor-led briefings with worked CFO cases, spreadsheet modelling, peer challenge sessions and board-reporting workshops. Participants analyse a simulated company facing a cash-flow shock, covenant pressure, supply-chain disruption and forecast volatility. They leave with a CFO Risk Oversight Pack: a risk appetite statement, financial risk dashboard, stress-test model, key risk indicator schedule, escalation protocol and board risk-reporting template that can be adapted to their organisation.

The course is designed for current and aspiring CFOs, finance directors and senior finance leaders who need to own risk oversight without becoming full-time risk specialists. It is equally valuable for managers preparing material for finance leadership, including treasury, FP&A, controllership, internal audit and enterprise risk teams.

Course objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Define a finance-led risk taxonomy linking operational, strategic and external risks to cash flow, earnings, balance-sheet and covenant impacts
  • Set measurable risk appetite, tolerance and escalation thresholds using quantitative financial limits and management triggers
  • Build liquidity and covenant stress-test models using base, downside and severe-but-plausible scenarios
  • Evaluate foreign exchange, interest-rate, commodity and counterparty exposures using exposure maps and sensitivity analysis
  • Design key risk indicators and leading-warning thresholds for treasury, forecasting, working capital and financial controls
  • Challenge risk-adjusted forecasts by testing assumptions, correlations, concentration risks and management response capacity
  • Prepare a board-ready financial risk dashboard and narrative using heat maps, trend indicators and decision requests
  • Create a CFO Risk Oversight Pack containing governance routines, reporting templates, scenario outputs and escalation actions

Benefits of attending

For you

  • Gain a repeatable method for converting broad business risks into financially material exposures and executive actions
  • Strengthen credibility in board, audit committee and lender discussions through clearer risk appetite and stress-test evidence
  • Improve the ability to challenge forecast assumptions without relying solely on operational risk specialists
  • Develop practical treasury and liquidity risk judgement for funding, covenant and counterparty decisions
  • Leave with adaptable reporting and governance templates that support a CFO, finance director or senior finance leadership role

For your organisation

  • Improves early detection of liquidity, covenant, concentration and forecast risks through defined key risk indicators
  • Creates a common finance risk language across treasury, FP&A, controllership, internal audit and operating management
  • Produces more credible downside forecasts and contingency actions for budgeting, funding and capital allocation decisions
  • Strengthens board and audit committee reporting with transparent risk appetite, exposure trends and escalation thresholds
  • Reduces the likelihood of unmanaged financial surprises by linking risk ownership to specific monitoring and response routines

Who should attend

  • Chief Financial Officers — who must provide board-level assurance on liquidity, performance and enterprise financial exposures
  • Finance Directors — who translate strategic and operational risks into financial plans, controls and executive decisions
  • VPs and Heads of Finance — who need consistent risk reporting across business units, treasury and planning teams
  • Treasury Directors and Treasurers — who manage liquidity, funding, hedging and counterparty exposures under CFO oversight
  • FP&A Directors and Senior Planning Managers — who must incorporate uncertainty, scenarios and risk triggers into forecasts
  • Financial Controllers and Heads of Internal Audit — who need to connect financial controls, reporting risks and assurance findings to executive oversight

Requirements and prerequisites

Participants should have practical experience reading management accounts, cash-flow forecasts and balance-sheet information, plus familiarity with budgeting or forecasting processes in a corporate, public-sector or not-for-profit organisation. Basic knowledge of liquidity, working capital, financial controls and common finance terminology is assumed. Participants should be comfortable working with spreadsheet tables and simple formulas; Microsoft Excel will be used for scenario exercises. Prior formal training in enterprise risk management, derivatives, statistics, ISO 31000 or COSO is not required. Complete beginners in finance should first obtain grounding in financial statements and corporate finance.

Training methodology

An experienced finance-risk instructor leads short technical sessions, then applies each method to a continuing CFO case. Participants build Excel-based liquidity scenarios, assess exposure maps, define risk thresholds and review management reports as if preparing for an executive committee meeting. Small groups challenge assumptions behind forecasts, hedging proposals and control evidence, before presenting conclusions in a board-reporting format. Daily exercises add sections to an individual CFO Risk Oversight Pack. The final session converts the pack into a 90-day implementation plan for each participant’s finance function.

Course outline

  • Risk ownership, three-lines coordination and finance accountability
  • Risk appetite, tolerance and capacity distinctions
  • Board, audit committee and executive risk-reporting requirements

Workshop: Participants map a simulated company’s enterprise risks to financial statement line items, cash-flow drivers and executive owners to produce a finance materiality map.

Day 2: Quantifying liquidity, funding and market exposures

  • Thirteen-week cash-flow forecasting structure and control points
  • Liquidity buffer calculation and contingency funding triggers
  • Debt covenant definitions, headroom calculations and breach scenarios
  • Foreign exchange transaction, translation and economic exposure mapping
  • Interest-rate sensitivity analysis for variable-rate debt portfolios

Frequently asked questions

You do not need prior COSO, ISO 31000 or enterprise risk management training. You should, however, be able to interpret management accounts, cash-flow forecasts and common finance metrics such as working capital, debt and operating margin.

A laptop with Microsoft Excel is strongly recommended because participants complete liquidity, covenant and scenario exercises. Power BI concepts are demonstrated, but prior Power BI experience or a paid licence is not required.

It is suitable for newly appointed CFOs and finance directors as well as experienced leaders formalising their oversight approach. The course starts with foundations but moves quickly into board reporting, stress testing and escalation decisions.

This course concentrates on the financial consequences and governance decisions that sit with the CFO: liquidity, covenants, forecast uncertainty, market exposure, controls and board assurance. General ERM courses typically cover wider organisational risk processes without the same depth of finance modelling and executive reporting.

The templates are designed for direct adaptation to monthly finance reviews, treasury meetings, forecast cycles and board packs. Participants identify their own priority exposures and leave with a 90-day plan for implementing indicators, scenarios and escalation routines.

Participants leave with a CFO Risk Oversight Pack containing a risk appetite statement, financial risk dashboard, liquidity stress-test model, key risk indicator schedule, escalation protocol and board-reporting template. These materials are completed against the course case and structured for customisation within the participant’s organisation.
