Course overview

Food Consumption Score (FCS) results are often used to prioritise assistance, monitor seasonal deterioration, inform response analysis and report food-security outcomes to donors. Errors in food-group recoding, seven-day frequency handling, weighting, threshold selection or population aggregation can produce misleading classifications and weak operational decisions. This course equips practitioners to calculate and interpret FCS results that can withstand technical review and be explained clearly to programme, assessment and coordination teams.

Participants work through the complete FCS method: the eight standard food groups, consumption-frequency caps, WFP weighting factors, household-level score calculation, poor/borderline/acceptable classifications, and weighted population estimates. They learn to prepare survey data, build reproducible calculation sheets, identify missing or implausible values, disaggregate results by sex, location, displacement status and livelihood group, and interpret FCS alongside Food Consumption-based Coping Strategy Index (rCSI), livelihood coping and market evidence. Particular attention is given to contextual threshold adaptation and the limitations of FCS as a proxy indicator.

Teaching combines instructor-led technical sessions with worked datasets drawn from humanitarian assessments. Participants calculate scores manually before automating the workflow in Microsoft Excel, review KoboToolbox-style questionnaire fields, and test interpretations against a response-planning case. Each participant leaves with an auditable FCS calculation workbook, a data-cleaning and quality-check checklist, and a short results brief containing tables, charts, narrative findings and recommended caveats for decision-makers.

Requirements and prerequisites

This is a foundation-to-intermediate course. Participants should be comfortable working with row-and-column data in Microsoft Excel, including filters, basic formulas and sorting; they should also understand the difference between a household survey question and an indicator result. Familiarity with food-security assessments, KoboToolbox or humanitarian programme data is helpful but not essential. No prior experience of Food Consumption Score calculation, statistics software, coding, sampling design or Power BI is required. Complete beginners should expect to spend time practising spreadsheet formulas and interpreting simple tables before progressing to weighted prevalence results and disaggregation.

Training methodology

Instructor-led explanations establish the FCS logic, followed immediately by guided calculations using a realistic household survey dataset. Participants map local foods to standard groups, calculate and validate scores in Microsoft Excel, and compare their outputs with automated checks. Small groups review case evidence from market monitoring, rCSI and livelihood coping data to test whether an FCS finding supports a response decision. The final day uses a reporting workshop in which each participant completes an application plan for an active or planned assessment workflow.
