Course overview

Agribusiness companies operate across food systems exposed to climate shocks, crop disease, price volatility, water constraints, trade restrictions, logistics disruption and changing community access to food. These risks can interrupt sourcing, damage supplier relationships, create reputational exposure and undermine commitments to responsible business conduct. Managers need more than seasonal supply forecasts: they need a disciplined way to identify where business decisions may affect food availability, access, utilisation and stability across sourcing regions.

This course equips participants to build and operate a practical food security risk-management process for agricultural supply chains. Participants learn to define food-security risk indicators; map exposure by commodity, geography and supplier tier; assess climate, market, operational and social drivers; and score likelihood, impact and control effectiveness using a risk register. The programme also covers early-warning data, scenario analysis, supplier due diligence, mitigation planning, responsible sourcing controls, incident escalation and management reporting.

Teaching combines instructor-led briefings with agribusiness cases, spreadsheet-based analysis and facilitated decision workshops. Working with a realistic commodity-sourcing scenario, participants create a food security risk profile, heat map, key risk indicators dashboard and prioritised mitigation plan. They leave with a structured Food Security Risk Management Action Plan that can be adapted to their company, commodity portfolio or sourcing country.

The course is designed for professionals working in procurement, sustainability, agricultural operations, supply-chain risk, sourcing, quality and corporate responsibility. It is equally relevant to managers approving investment in supplier resilience, traceability, contingency stocks or community-focused food-security initiatives.

Course objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Map food-security exposure across commodities, sourcing geographies, supplier tiers and affected stakeholder groups
  • Apply the four food-security dimensions—availability, access, utilisation and stability—to agribusiness risk assessments
  • Build a food security risk register with causes, controls, owners, likelihood, impact and residual-risk ratings
  • Analyse early-warning indicators using IPC classifications, market prices, rainfall anomalies and crop-production signals
  • Conduct climate, supply-disruption and price-shock scenarios for a priority commodity supply chain
  • Design supplier due-diligence questions and contractual controls for food-security and responsible-sourcing risks
  • Prioritise mitigation actions using control-effectiveness, feasibility, cost and risk-reduction criteria
  • Produce a management-ready food security risk dashboard and 90-day action plan

Benefits of attending

Who should attend

  • Agribusiness Risk Managers — who need to integrate food-security threats into enterprise and supply-chain risk registers
  • Procurement and Sourcing Managers — who must secure commodity supply while managing supplier and community impacts
  • Sustainability and ESG Managers — who translate responsible-sourcing commitments into measurable risk controls
  • Supply Chain and Logistics Managers — who plan for disruptions affecting food movement, storage and market access
  • Agricultural Operations Managers — who manage production, water, inputs and resilience across farms or outgrower networks
  • Corporate Affairs and Community Investment Managers — who need defensible responses to food-security concerns in operating areas

Requirements and prerequisites

This is a foundation-to-intermediate course. Participants should be comfortable discussing their organisation’s commodities, supplier relationships, sourcing countries and basic operational risks. Familiarity with simple risk concepts such as likelihood, impact, controls and risk owners is helpful, as is the ability to work with tables and charts in Microsoft Excel. No prior food-security qualification, humanitarian experience, statistical modelling expertise, GIS capability or prior use of IPC or FAO data is required. Complete beginners should expect a structured introduction to food-security concepts before applying them to progressively more detailed agribusiness cases.

Training methodology

The five days combine short instructor-led modules with guided analysis of an agribusiness commodity case. Participants use risk-register templates to map sourcing exposure, interpret IPC, market and climate signals, and test disruption scenarios in small groups. Facilitated workshops require teams to choose controls, assign action owners and defend priorities against commercial, operational and stakeholder criteria. Daily outputs are refined into an individual application plan on the final day, with instructor feedback on assumptions, indicators, escalation thresholds and practical implementation steps.

Course outline

Day 1: Food security and agribusiness exposure

  • Food-security dimensions: availability, access, utilisation and stability
  • Agribusiness pathways affecting local and regional food security
  • Commodity, geography and supplier-tier exposure mapping
  • Food-security risk versus operational supply-chain risk
  • Stakeholder identification across farmers, workers, traders and consumers
  • Materiality assessment for food-security impacts and dependencies
  • Risk taxonomy for climate, market, social and governance drivers

Workshop: Participants build an initial exposure map for a selected commodity, locating high-risk sourcing regions, supplier tiers and affected stakeholder groups.

Day 2: Risk assessment and early warning

  • Food security risk-register structure and risk statements
  • Likelihood, impact, velocity and control-effectiveness scoring
  • IPC Acute Food Insecurity Classification interpretation
  • FAO GIEWS production, price and supply indicators
  • Rainfall anomaly, drought and crop-condition signals
  • Market-price transmission and household food-access risks
  • Key risk indicators and escalation threshold design

Workshop: Participants populate and score a food security risk register using a case dataset of rainfall, crop yield, market price and supplier information.

Day 3: Scenario analysis and supplier resilience

  • Scenario design for drought, pest outbreak, export ban and conflict disruption
  • Supply-chain dependency mapping and critical-node analysis
  • Production shortfall and procurement-volume sensitivity analysis
  • Supplier financial and operational resilience indicators
  • Outgrower and smallholder vulnerability assessment
  • Supplier due-diligence questionnaires for food-security risks
  • Contractual controls, corrective actions and supplier improvement plans

Workshop: Teams model a drought-driven production shortfall and produce a supplier resilience response with sourcing, support and escalation actions.

Day 4: Mitigation, governance and responsible sourcing

  • Risk treatment options: avoid, reduce, transfer, accept and collaborate
  • Diversified sourcing and contingency-stock decision criteria
  • Climate-resilient agriculture and water-stewardship interventions
  • Supplier capacity-building and smallholder support mechanisms
  • Responsible purchasing practices and unintended food-access impacts
  • Incident management, grievance channels and community engagement
  • Governance roles, risk appetite and board-level oversight

Workshop: Participants develop and prioritise a mitigation portfolio, assigning control owners, deadlines, budget assumptions and residual-risk targets.

Frequently asked questions

No. The course introduces the core food-security concepts and then applies them to commercial agribusiness decisions. Experience in procurement, operations, sustainability, agricultural production or risk management will help participants relate the methods to their work.

A laptop with Microsoft Excel is strongly recommended because participants work with risk-register and dashboard templates. The course introduces relevant data sources and standards, including IPC and FAO GIEWS, while any Power BI activity is demonstrated or adapted to the delivery setting.

It suits professionals whose decisions affect agricultural sourcing, supplier management, production resilience, community relationships or ESG risk. Cross-functional groups are particularly valuable because the final action plan requires procurement, operations, sustainability and risk responsibilities to be coordinated.

The course focuses specifically on how agribusiness operations and sourcing dependencies interact with food availability, access, utilisation and stability. Participants use food-security warning indicators, supplier-resilience questions and responsible-sourcing controls rather than relying only on conventional delivery, cost and compliance metrics.

You can adapt the risk-register template to a priority commodity, sourcing region or supplier portfolio and use the key risk indicators in existing risk reviews. The mitigation planning method also supports decisions on supplier engagement, contingency sourcing, resilience investment and executive escalation.

You will leave with a completed Food Security Risk Management Action Plan containing an exposure map, risk register, heat map, indicators, mitigation actions and assigned owners. The materials are designed to be tailored after the course to your company’s risk appetite, data sources and governance process.
