Course overview
Physical security teams need to detect, verify, coordinate and document incidents without losing time between cameras, access-control events, alarms and operator handovers. Genetec Security Center can bring these functions into one operational environment, but its value depends on operators and supervisors knowing how to configure tasks, interpret live events, manage alarms and preserve usable evidence. This course addresses the practical gap between having a security platform installed and running a controlled, auditable security operation.
Participants work with Genetec Security Center through Security Desk and Config Tool, covering video surveillance, access control, intrusion monitoring, maps, alarm workflows, event-to-action rules, reporting and incident coordination. They learn to build operator workspaces, manage camera and door entities, create alarm acknowledgement procedures, investigate incidents using timelines and bookmarks, export evidence appropriately, and apply role-based permissions. The programme also examines system health, audit trails, privacy controls and escalation procedures relevant to health, safety and environment (HSE) operations.
Instructor-led demonstrations are followed by guided configuration labs and scenario-based control-room exercises. Participants use a simulated site with cameras, doors, alarms and incident events to make operational decisions under defined procedures. By the end of the week, each participant produces a Security Center operations playbook containing an alarm-response workflow, operator workspace design, evidence-handling checklist, access-permission model and site-specific implementation actions.

Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should be comfortable using a Windows-based computer, navigating files and browser-style interfaces, and working with basic security concepts such as CCTV cameras, access-controlled doors, alarms and incident escalation. Experience of a control room, facilities operation, HSE function or physical security system is useful but not mandatory. This is a foundation-to-intermediate course: complete beginners can attend and should expect structured guidance through Security Desk and Config Tool. Prior Genetec certification, programming skills, database administration, network engineering knowledge and prior experience configuring video management systems are not required.
Training methodology
The course combines instructor-led explanation with live work in a configured Genetec Security Center training environment. Participants use Security Desk to respond to simulated camera, access-control and intrusion events, then use Config Tool to adjust the underlying entities, permissions and workflows. Case studies examine control-room handovers, unauthorised access, safety incidents and evidence requests. Small-group workshops test alarm procedures and escalation decisions. On the final day, participants convert their lab work into a site-focused operations playbook and implementation plan for manager review.

- Security Desk interface, task areas, tiles and workspace management
- Config Tool navigation and the relationship between entities and operator tasks
- Camera, door, area, input and output entity fundamentals
- Live monitoring views, camera sequences and map-based situational awareness
- User roles, privileges, partitions and operator access boundaries
- Control-room procedures for shift start, handover and event logging
Workshop: Participants configure a role-based Security Desk workspace for a control-room operator and produce a shift-start checklist.
Day 2: Video surveillance, access control and alarm response

- Access-control monitoring for doors, readers, cardholders and forced-door events
- Alarm entity design, priorities, instructions and acknowledgement states

Day 4: System governance, resilience and HSE application
