Course overview

Google Analytics 4 data is often available but underused: teams rely on default reports, disagree on what a conversion means, and struggle to connect website behaviour to campaign, product and revenue decisions. Managers need reporting that explains performance clearly, while analysts and marketers need a defensible method for investigating acquisition quality, engagement, journeys, funnels and outcomes. This course addresses the practical gap between collecting GA4 data and using it to answer business questions with evidence.

Participants learn to structure analysis around measurement objectives, navigate GA4 reports and Explorations, validate event and conversion data, segment audiences, analyse acquisition and attribution, and investigate user journeys and drop-off. The course covers Google Analytics 4 reporting dimensions and metrics, comparison design, funnel and path exploration, ecommerce and lead-generation analysis, UTM governance, Google Tag Manager validation, BigQuery export concepts and Looker Studio dashboard design. Participants practise turning raw platform outputs into clear findings, recommendations and performance-reporting narratives.

Teaching combines instructor demonstrations with guided work in a GA4 training property, realistic digital performance cases and structured reporting workshops. Participants complete diagnostic exercises using traffic, campaign, event and conversion data, then build a reporting pack for a defined business scenario. They leave with a documented measurement-question framework, an analysis plan, a GA4 Exploration specification and a stakeholder-ready Looker Studio performance dashboard outline that can be adapted for their organisation.

The course is designed for professionals who already work with web, app, campaign or ecommerce data and need to make stronger use of GA4. It is particularly valuable where marketing, product, sales and analytics teams need a shared reporting language and more reliable evidence for optimisation decisions.

Course objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Configure an analysis framework linking business objectives, KPIs, events, conversions and reporting questions
  • Validate GA4 event and conversion data using DebugView, Realtime reporting and Google Tag Manager checks

Who should attend

  • Digital Marketing Managers — who need to evaluate channel performance and justify budget allocation with reliable evidence
  • Web Analysts — who must turn GA4 events, journeys and conversions into actionable findings
  • Performance Marketing Specialists — who need to assess campaign quality beyond clicks and platform-reported conversions
  • Ecommerce Managers — who need to identify product, checkout and purchase-funnel performance issues
  • Product Managers — who use behavioural data to assess feature adoption, activation and user journeys
  • Marketing Operations Specialists — who support tracking governance, UTM discipline and recurring performance reporting

Requirements and prerequisites

Participants should be comfortable using spreadsheets to filter, sort and interpret tables, and should understand basic digital marketing concepts such as sessions, traffic sources, landing pages, campaigns and conversions. Prior exposure to Google Analytics 4 is useful, including navigating reports or reviewing website performance, but advanced GA4 configuration is not assumed. Participants should be able to describe the main website, app, lead-generation or ecommerce journey relevant to their work. SQL, JavaScript, data engineering and prior Looker Studio dashboard-building experience are not required; BigQuery is introduced from an analyst-user perspective rather than as a programming course.

Training methodology

The instructor uses a live GA4 training property to demonstrate each analytical technique before participants apply it to guided datasets and business cases. Exercises include checking event quality in DebugView, constructing comparisons, diagnosing a conversion funnel, investigating channel performance and drafting dashboard components in Looker Studio. Small-group discussions focus on interpreting evidence, challenging misleading metrics and framing recommendations for non-technical stakeholders. On the final day, participants assemble their analysis into a reporting pack and create an implementation plan for applying the methods to their own GA4 property.

Course outline

Day 1: GA4 measurement foundations and data confidence

  • GA4 account, property, data stream and reporting identity structure
  • Business objectives translated into measurement questions and KPIs
  • Events, parameters, key events and conversions in GA4
  • Users, sessions, engaged sessions and engagement-rate interpretation
  • Dimensions, metrics, scopes and cardinality limitations
  • Standard reports, report customisation and library collections
  • Data validation with Realtime reports and DebugView

Workshop: Participants audit a sample measurement plan, identify missing or ambiguous events, and produce a prioritised GA4 data-quality checklist.

Day 2: Audience, acquisition and campaign performance analysis

  • User acquisition versus traffic acquisition reporting
  • Default channel groups and source, medium and campaign dimensions
  • UTM parameter structure and campaign naming governance
  • Comparisons for device, geography, channel and new-versus-returning users
  • Audience creation and eligibility conditions
  • Landing-page analysis using engagement and conversion signals
  • Attribution models, conversion paths and interpretation limits

Workshop: Participants analyse a multi-channel campaign case, create comparisons, and produce a channel-performance finding with recommended budget or targeting action.

Day 3: Explorations, journeys and conversion diagnosis

  • Explorations workspace setup and tab configuration
  • Free Form exploration tables, visualisations and filters
  • Segment creation using user, session and event conditions
  • Funnel Exploration for lead-generation and ecommerce journeys
  • Open and closed funnels, elapsed time and breakdown dimensions
  • Path Exploration for forward and reverse user-journey analysis

Frequently asked questions

You should understand basic website or campaign metrics and be able to navigate a spreadsheet. The course assumes some familiarity with digital performance reporting, but it teaches GA4 reporting, Explorations and validation methods from an intermediate working level rather than assuming specialist analytics expertise.

No. Instructor-led exercises use a training property and prepared case data so that every participant can practise the techniques. If organisational access is available, you can use your own reporting questions during application-planning activities, subject to your employer's data-access rules.

Bring a laptop with a current web browser and access to a Google account, ideally one permitted to use Google Analytics and Looker Studio. No local software installation, SQL environment or programming tools are required.

It is built for all three where they need to make decisions from GA4 data, particularly digital marketers, web analysts, ecommerce professionals and product managers. Examples cover campaign acquisition, lead funnels, ecommerce journeys and behavioural analysis rather than only one discipline.

This course concentrates on analysing and reporting with data already collected in GA4: interpreting metrics, building Explorations, diagnosing journeys and communicating recommendations. Google Tag Manager is used to support event validation, but the course does not teach container implementation, JavaScript tagging or a full tracking deployment.

You will leave with a measurement-question framework, data-quality checklist, Exploration approach, dashboard wireframe and a structured reporting-pack template. These deliverables can be adapted to your own acquisition, conversion, ecommerce or product-performance reporting cycle.
