Course overview
Marketing teams often make campaign and budget decisions from conversion reports that are incomplete, duplicated or impossible to audit. A form submission may fire twice, a purchase may be attributed to the wrong channel, or a Google Ads conversion may not match the transaction recorded in GA4. These failures affect bid optimisation, revenue reporting, lead-quality analysis and stakeholder confidence. This course addresses the practical implementation work required to make website conversion measurement reliable, testable and maintainable through Google Tag Manager.
Participants build a structured Google Tag Manager implementation for common lead-generation and ecommerce journeys. They configure data layer events, triggers, variables, Google tags and event parameters; map conversions into Google Analytics 4 and Google Ads; and distinguish page-view, click, form, transaction and custom-event tracking patterns. The course covers conversion linker configuration, cross-domain measurement, enhanced conversions, consent-aware tagging, debugging with Preview mode and browser developer tools, and methods for preventing duplicate or inflated conversion counts.
Training is delivered through instructor demonstrations, guided configuration labs and a sustained implementation case study based on a multi-step website journey. Participants inspect an existing container, document its measurement requirements, implement tags against a supplied data layer specification, validate events and resolve deliberately introduced tracking faults. They leave with a completed conversion tracking implementation pack: a measurement plan, data layer map, GTM container architecture, tag and trigger inventory, test cases and a production-ready QA checklist that can be adapted for their own site.
The course is designed for digital marketing and analytics professionals who already work with campaign performance or web measurement and need to implement, govern or confidently assess GTM conversion tracking rather than rely solely on agency or developer assurance.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Develop a conversion measurement plan linking business goals, user actions, event names, parameters and reporting destinations
- Configure Google Tag Manager tags, triggers, variables and folders for lead-generation and ecommerce conversion journeys
- Implement data layer event specifications for form submissions, product interactions, purchases and multi-step funnels
- Map GA4 events and key events to Google Ads conversion actions with appropriate values, currency and counting settings
- Apply conversion linker, cross-domain measurement and enhanced conversions configuration to improve attribution continuity
- Configure consent-aware Google tags using Consent Mode signals and document their effect on measurement
- Debug firing conditions, event payloads and duplicate conversions using GTM Preview mode and Chrome DevTools
- Produce a deployment-ready tracking specification, QA test script and container governance checklist
Benefits of attending
For you
- Gain the ability to diagnose why reported conversions differ across GTM, GA4 and Google Ads
- Build a defensible measurement plan that turns marketing requirements into developer-ready tracking specifications
- Reduce dependence on agencies or developers for routine tag configuration, validation and fault isolation
- Demonstrate practical competence with consent-aware conversion measurement during analytics and marketing technology projects
- Create a reusable QA and governance approach for managing GTM changes across campaigns and website releases
For your organisation
- Improve confidence in campaign ROI by reducing duplicate, missing and incorrectly attributed conversions
- Provide paid media teams with better-quality conversion signals for Google Ads bidding and budget allocation
- Shorten implementation cycles through clearer data layer requirements and repeatable GTM QA procedures
- Reduce privacy and compliance exposure by documenting consent-dependent tag behaviour and measurement decisions
- Create an auditable container structure and tracking inventory that is less dependent on individual agency knowledge
Target competencies
Who should attend
- Digital Marketing Managers — who need trustworthy conversion data for channel budgets, agency oversight and performance reporting
- Digital Analytics Specialists — who configure or assure GA4 event and conversion measurement across websites
- PPC and Paid Media Specialists — who depend on accurate Google Ads conversion actions for bidding and campaign optimisation
- Marketing Operations Managers — who govern lead capture, CRM hand-offs and marketing technology processes
- Web Analysts — who investigate discrepancies between website behaviour, analytics reports and advertising platforms
- Web Developers and Technical Product Owners — who must translate measurement requirements into data layer and release requirements
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should be comfortable navigating Google Analytics 4 reports and understand core website concepts such as URLs, forms, buttons, cookies, browser events and conversion funnels. Prior exposure to Google Tag Manager is expected: attendees should recognise containers, tags, triggers and variables, even if they have not built a full implementation. Access to a laptop with Chrome and a Google account is required for labs. Basic JavaScript awareness is useful when reading data layer objects, but coding is not required. No prior experience with server-side tagging, APIs or advanced SQL is assumed.
Training methodology
Each day combines focused instructor-led explanation with configuration work in a Google Tag Manager training container and GA4 test property. Participants analyse realistic lead and ecommerce journeys, convert business requirements into event specifications, then build and test tags in guided labs. Small-group troubleshooting sessions use faulty implementations to practise reading Preview mode timelines, network requests and event payloads. The final day is an implementation workshop in which each participant assembles a measurement plan, release test script and governance actions for a current or planned website.
Course outline
Day 1: Conversion measurement architecture and GTM foundations
- Business objectives, macro conversions and micro-conversion definitions
- Measurement plans and event taxonomy design
- Google Tag Manager container, workspace and version architecture
- Tags, triggers, variables and trigger exceptions
- Built-in variables and user-defined variable selection
- Google tag configuration for GA4 measurement
- Preview mode timelines and baseline implementation auditing
Workshop: Audit a supplied GTM container and produce a conversion measurement plan identifying required events, owners and reporting destinations.
Day 2: Data layer and website interaction tracking
- Data layer structure, event pushes and key-value pairs
- Data layer variables for transaction and form data
- Click tracking with CSS selectors and element variables
- Form submission tracking patterns and validation safeguards
- Custom event triggers for asynchronous website interactions
- Single-page application route changes and history events
