Course overview

Sustainability teams are increasingly expected to produce disclosures that can withstand scrutiny from investors, customers, regulators, assurance providers and affected stakeholders. Yet many reports still rely on broad ESG claims, untested data requests and materiality processes that do not meet GRI requirements. This course addresses the practical work of building a GRI-aligned reporting process: determining which disclosures apply, documenting decisions, collecting defensible evidence and preparing a report that communicates significant impacts rather than only positive initiatives.

Participants work through the GRI Standards architecture, including GRI 1: Foundation 2021, GRI 2: General Disclosures 2021 and GRI 3: Material Topics 2021. They learn to apply the GRI material topics process, map stakeholders and impacts, define reporting boundaries, select applicable Topic Standards, create disclosure-level data requirements and build a GRI content index. The course also examines reporting principles, human rights due diligence links, management approach disclosures, data-quality controls, omissions, restatements and preparation for external assurance.

Teaching combines instructor-led interpretation of the Standards with worked reporting examples, group reviews of disclosure decisions and Excel-based reporting templates. Participants complete a simulated reporting assignment based on an organisation with environmental, labour, safety and community impacts. They leave with a practical GRI reporting pack: a material topics assessment workflow, disclosure checklist, evidence-request tracker, draft content index and 90-day implementation plan that can be adapted for their own organisation.

The programme suits sustainability, ESG, HSE, CSR, communications, risk and data professionals who contribute to sustainability reporting or provide the operational evidence behind it. Requirements and prerequisites

This is a foundation-to-intermediate course. Participants should be comfortable reading corporate policies, operational performance data and basic sustainability or HSE metrics such as energy use, injuries, waste, emissions or workforce figures. Familiarity with ESG reporting, annual reports or stakeholder engagement is helpful but not essential. Participants should be able to use Microsoft Excel for simple tables, filters and data registers. No prior GRI certification, assurance experience, carbon-accounting qualification, specialist reporting software or detailed knowledge of ESG frameworks is required. Complete beginners should expect focused reading of selected GRI disclosure requirements before applying them in guided exercises.

Training methodology

The course uses short instructor-led sessions to interpret specific GRI requirements, followed by guided application to a realistic reporting case. Participants analyse impact scenarios, conduct a material-topic prioritisation exercise, identify applicable disclosures and construct an Excel-based evidence register. Small groups review draft disclosures against the reporting principles and challenge omissions, boundaries and unsupported statements. Daily debriefs connect the case work to participants' own reporting cycles. On day five, each participant turns the templates and findings into a practical 90-day GRI reporting action plan for their organisation.
