Course overview
Healthcare organisations must balance patient access, quality requirements, workforce pressures and reimbursement constraints while maintaining sustainable margins. Finance professionals and operational managers need to distinguish legitimate clinical investment from avoidable cost growth, explain performance clearly to non-financial leaders, and act before a variance becomes an annual budget shortfall. This course addresses the practical decisions behind service-line performance, labour spend, supplies usage, revenue assumptions and capital priorities.
Participants learn to build an operating budget and rolling forecast for a hospital department, clinic network or service line; analyse volume, price, mix and efficiency variances; and calculate contribution margin using healthcare-specific cost drivers. The programme covers activity-based costing, relative value unit (RVU) measures, diagnosis-related group (DRG) reimbursement logic, payer mix, labour productivity, supply-chain controls, capital appraisal and dashboard reporting. Participants practise turning financial results into focused cost-control actions without treating patient safety or care quality as afterthoughts.
Instructor-led workshops use realistic provider finance data, including monthly actuals, staffing rosters, procedure volumes, payer information and supply spend. Participants work in Microsoft Excel and Power BI to create a financial plan, variance pack and management dashboard, then present recommendations to a simulated executive review panel. Each participant leaves with a completed healthcare financial planning and cost-control action plan that can be adapted to their own department or organisation.
The course is designed for intermediate finance, operations and clinical-management professionals who already work with budgets or performance data and need stronger methods for planning, analysis and financially defensible operational decisions.

Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should be comfortable reading an income statement, balance sheet and monthly budget report, and should understand basic accounting terms such as revenue, operating expense, fixed cost, variable cost, accrual and variance. Experience in a hospital, clinic, insurer, diagnostic provider or other healthcare setting is strongly recommended. Participants should be able to use Microsoft Excel for formulas, sorting, filtering and simple charts; a laptop with Excel is required for exercises. Prior experience with Power BI, DRG coding, RVUs, Medicare cost reporting or activity-based costing is not required, as these methods are introduced and applied during the course.
Training methodology
The five-day programme combines instructor-led finance briefings with guided spreadsheet modelling, small-group case work and management-reporting simulations. Participants use a healthcare provider case dataset to build budgets, forecast demand and revenue, calculate service-line costs, investigate labour and supply variances, and design a Power BI dashboard. Groups test cost-control options against patient-volume, quality and capacity constraints rather than treating savings as a purely accounting exercise. The final session is an executive review simulation followed by individual application planning for a live workplace issue.
