Course overview

Index-based agricultural insurance can protect farmers, lenders and value-chain partners against drought, excess rainfall, heat and vegetation stress without the cost and delays of farm-level loss adjustment. Yet many products fail because the index is weakly correlated with actual loss, the contract window misses the crop calendar, pricing assumptions are poorly documented, or distribution partners cannot explain basis risk. This course equips participants to design, test and document weather-index, area-yield and satellite-index insurance products for agricultural markets. Participants define target customer segments and insurable perils; select index variables and data sources; establish trigger, exit and payout structures; assess basis risk; estimate technical premiums; set limits and deductibles; and build product governance controls. Training methodology

The five-day programme combines instructor-led product-design briefings with hands-on analysis of agricultural calendars, weather series, yield records and satellite-derived indicators. Participants work through a realistic insurer case in small teams, using Excel templates to test triggers, payout curves and premium assumptions, and QGIS demonstrations to examine spatial exposure and station coverage. Structured peer reviews simulate product-committee scrutiny of basis risk, customer value and operational feasibility. The final session is an application workshop in which participants complete and present an implementation plan for their own market or portfolio.

Frequently asked questions

You should understand core insurance terms such as premium, sum insured, underwriting and claims, and be comfortable working with Excel tables and formulas. Prior agricultural insurance or actuarial experience is useful but not required; the course explains the agricultural and climate-data concepts used in the exercises.

A laptop with Microsoft Excel is strongly recommended because participants work with pricing and payout-curve templates. No coding is required, and R and QGIS are introduced through guided demonstrations rather than programming exercises.
