They learn to map a business process to systems and data, distinguish common technology roles and responsibilities, interpret a basic architecture diagram, assess vendor claims, identify control gaps, and contribute effectively to requirements, prioritisation, and governance discussions.
Instruction combines expert-led explanation with realistic business cases, architecture-reading exercises, data-flow mapping, risk assessment workshops, and group decision-making activities. Participants work with Microsoft Excel, Power BI, Jira, and ITIL 4 practices to analyse technology information and frame business-facing decisions. They leave with an IT Business Engagement Pack: a documented process and system map, stakeholder questions, a requirements brief, a technology risk register, and a 90-day application plan for a current workplace initiative.
The course is designed for managers and specialists whose roles intersect with IT, digital transformation, data, technology procurement, or operational improvement. Training methodology
The course uses instructor-led briefings to establish core concepts, followed by guided exercises based on a fictional organisation modernising a customer service operation. Participants read architecture diagrams, map systems and data flows, review a cloud supplier proposal, create Jira-style requirements, and assess a security incident scenario using an ITIL 4 service perspective. Small-group workshops require participants to defend business decisions with evidence. Each day closes with updates to an individual IT Business Engagement Pack, culminating in a practical 90-day application plan.

Day 1: IT foundations and the business technology landscape
- Business capabilities, processes, systems, data, and technology services
- Core IT operating model roles: CIO, architecture, delivery, operations, security, and support
- Enterprise architecture layers: business, application, data, technology, and security
- Application categories: ERP, CRM, collaboration, analytics, and workflow platforms
- Infrastructure fundamentals: networks, servers, storage, endpoints, and identity services
- Cloud service models: SaaS, PaaS, IaaS, and shared-responsibility boundaries
- Reading a business-facing system context diagram
Workshop: Participants create a system context map for a customer-order process, identifying business users, applications, data stores, external suppliers, and integrations.
Day 2: Data, integration, and business intelligence
- Data entities, records, master data, transactional data, and reference data
- Data ownership, stewardship, lineage, retention, and quality dimensions
- Data-flow diagrams for operational reporting and decision support
- Integration patterns: APIs, batch files, event messages, middleware, and manual workarounds
- Common integration risks including duplicate records, failed interfaces, and timing delays
- Power BI dashboard concepts: measures, filters, refresh schedules, and source reliability
- Privacy and access principles for personally identifiable information
Workshop: Participants map the data flow from customer order capture to a Power BI management dashboard and document three data-quality or privacy risks.
Day 3: Cybersecurity, resilience, and IT service management
- Cyber threat types: phishing, ransomware, credential theft, insider misuse, and third-party compromise
- Identity and access management: authentication, authorisation, least privilege, and multifactor authentication
- Security controls across people, process, technology, and supplier arrangements
- Risk-register structure: likelihood, impact, control owner, treatment, and residual risk
- Business continuity, disaster recovery, recovery time objectives, and recovery point objectives
- ITIL 4 service value system and incident, problem, change, and service request practices
- Service-level agreements, operational-level agreements, and business service measures
Workshop: Participants assess a ransomware incident case, complete a business-facing technology risk register, and recommend immediate service and control actions.
Day 4: Digital delivery, requirements, and technology sourcing
- Project, product, agile, and hybrid delivery models
- Jira hierarchy: initiatives, epics, user stories, tasks, bugs, and backlogs
- User-story writing using role, goal, benefit, and acceptance-criteria formats
- Prioritisation methods: MoSCoW, value-versus-effort, and dependency mapping
- Technology delivery risks: scope creep, technical debt, environment readiness, and adoption gaps
- Software and cloud vendor evaluation criteria: functionality, integration, security, service, cost, and exit terms
- Business case components: benefits, costs, assumptions, risks, and success measures
Workshop: Participants convert a service-improvement need into a Jira-style epic, three user stories with acceptance criteria, and a weighted vendor evaluation scorecard.
Day 5: Technology governance and workplace application
- Technology governance forums, decision rights, escalation paths, and architecture review
- Portfolio management concepts: strategic alignment, capacity, sequencing, and benefits tracking
- Total cost of ownership: licensing, implementation, support, integration, training, and retirement costs
- Technology KPIs: availability, incident volume, adoption, cycle time, data quality, and service satisfaction
- Communicating technology risk and delivery status to executive stakeholders
- Creating an IT Business Engagement Pack for a live business initiative
- Ninety-day action planning for stakeholder engagement, discovery, governance, and capability building
Workshop: Participants present their completed IT Business Engagement Pack, receive peer and instructor feedback, and finalise a 90-day workplace application plan.
