Course overview
Crop losses, pesticide costs, residue non-compliance, pest resistance and pollinator harm are often treated as separate problems. In practice, they are symptoms of weak pest decision-making: sprays applied without thresholds, incomplete field scouting records, misidentified pests, and control plans that ignore crop stage, natural enemies and market requirements. This course equips agricultural professionals to replace routine pesticide schedules with an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) system that protects yield, worker safety, beneficial organisms and buyer compliance requirements.
Participants learn to build crop-specific IPM programmes using field scouting, pest and disease identification, economic thresholds, action thresholds, pest life-cycle analysis and risk-based intervention decisions. The course covers cultural, mechanical, biological and chemical controls; pesticide resistance management; safe pesticide selection; spray records; residue-risk reduction; and monitoring of IPM performance. Participants practise interpreting pest incidence data, mapping field hotspots, selecting interventions using a control hierarchy, and documenting decisions for farm management, extension teams, auditors and commercial buyers.
Delivery combines instructor-led technical sessions with crop-production case studies, pest identification exercises, scouting-data analysis and facilitated control-planning workshops. Each participant works through a realistic farm scenario and leaves with a documented IPM implementation plan containing a scouting protocol, threshold matrix, seasonal pest calendar, approved-control options, pesticide resistance rotation schedule and monitoring indicators. The course is particularly valuable for professionals responsible for production performance, extension advice, pesticide governance or sustainable sourcing.

Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have practical familiarity with crop production operations, including crop growth stages, common field activities, pesticide labels and basic farm recordkeeping. Experience in agronomy, extension, farm supervision, quality assurance or input supply is useful because exercises use real scouting and spray-decision scenarios. Participants should be comfortable reading simple tables and calculating percentages or pest counts; no advanced statistics is required. A laptop with spreadsheet capability is recommended for the data exercises. Prior training in entomology, plant pathology, GIS or pesticide chemistry is not required, and participants do not need to arrive with a completed farm IPM plan.
Training methodology
The instructor uses short technical briefings to establish each IPM method, followed by applied work on crop and pest scenarios. Participants examine sample scouting sheets, diagnose pest-pressure patterns, calculate threshold-based responses, compare control options and build resistance rotations from pesticide mode-of-action labels. Group case work mirrors decisions faced by commercial farms, extension programmes and outgrower schemes. Facilitated peer review tests whether proposed actions are practical, safe and auditable. The final session converts course work into an IPM implementation plan for a selected crop, production site or producer group.

Day 1: IPM foundations and pest decision systems

Workshop: Participants complete an IPM baseline diagnosis for a farm case and identify the three highest-priority weaknesses in its current pest-control system.
Day 2: Field scouting, identification and monitoring data

- Transect walks, quadrat sampling and fixed-plant inspection methods
- Pest incidence, severity, prevalence and damage assessment measures
- Field signs for distinguishing insect, mite, disease and nutrient-damage symptoms

- Scouting forms, photo records and data-quality checks
Workshop: Participants design a field scouting protocol and complete a sample observation sheet from a crop-pest monitoring dataset.
Day 3: Prevention and non-chemical control measures

- Sanitation, volunteer-crop removal and destruction of pest reservoirs
- Planting dates, spacing, irrigation and fertilisation as cultural controls

Day 4: Responsible pesticide use and resistance management
