Course overview
Environmental teams are often asked to demonstrate whether management programmes are improving actual environmental performance, not simply whether procedures are documented. This requires more than collecting utility bills, waste tickets and incident records. Professionals must select meaningful environmental performance indicators (EPIs), establish credible baselines, distinguish operational variation from real improvement, and present results that management can use to prioritise investment, corrective action and risk control. ISO 14031 provides the structured method for doing this.
This five-day course teaches participants how to apply ISO 14031 Environmental Performance Evaluation (EPE) within an ISO 14001 environmental management system or as a standalone performance measurement framework. Participants learn to identify significant environmental aspects, define management performance indicators (MPIs), operational performance indicators (OPIs) and environmental condition indicators (ECIs), build indicator specifications, set data-quality controls, normalise results, analyse trends and communicate performance through management-review-ready reports and dashboards.
Instructor-led sessions are supported by worked industrial, facilities and service-sector cases, spreadsheet-based indicator calculations, facilitated peer review and practical workshops. Participants develop an Environmental Performance Evaluation Plan for their own organisation or a realistic case organisation, including an aspect-to-indicator matrix, indicator data sheets, baseline and target logic, data-validation checks, reporting format and implementation actions. The completed plan is a practical deliverable that can be refined and introduced after the course.
The course is suited to experienced environmental practitioners, EMS coordinators, sustainability analysts and operational leaders responsible for translating environmental data into controlled, defensible performance decisions.

Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have practical familiarity with environmental aspects and impacts, basic ISO 14001 EMS concepts, and the types of data generated by operations, facilities, laboratory, waste or utility systems. They should be comfortable reading tables, calculating simple ratios and percentages, and using spreadsheet functions such as SUM, AVERAGE, filters and charts. Bringing examples of current environmental objectives, meter data or waste records is useful but not essential. Prior ISO 14001 auditor training, statistical software, programming skills and prior Power BI experience are not required.
Training methodology
The programme combines focused instructor explanation of ISO 14031 with applied indicator-design workshops using realistic energy, water, emissions and waste data. Participants work individually and in groups to classify indicators, draft data sheets, calculate normalised measures, test data quality and interpret conflicting trends. Case discussions examine how poor boundaries, missing production data and unsuitable targets distort reported performance. Each day adds to an Environmental Performance Evaluation Plan, and the final session uses peer review and instructor feedback to convert that plan into a workplace implementation sequence.

Day 1: ISO 14031 framework and evaluation scope
- Purpose and principles of Environmental Performance Evaluation

- Environmental aspects, impacts and significant-aspect determination
- Environmental policy, objectives, targets and performance evaluation links
- Management Performance Indicators, Operational Performance Indicators and Environmental Condition Indicators
- EPE scope, organisational boundaries and operational-control boundaries
- Stakeholder decision needs and environmental information requirements
Workshop: Participants map a case organisation's significant environmental aspects to management, operational and condition indicator needs.
Day 2: Indicator architecture and specification design
- Indicator selection criteria: relevance, comparability, sensitivity and practicality
- Building an aspect-to-indicator matrix
- Designing Management Performance Indicators for programmes, training and investment
- Designing Operational Performance Indicators for energy, water, waste and emissions
- Selecting Environmental Condition Indicators for local environmental effects
- Indicator formulae, units, denominators and normalisation factors
- Indicator data-sheet fields, ownership and review frequency
Workshop: Participants create three indicator specification sheets and an aspect-to-indicator matrix for an assigned operational scenario.
Day 3: Data collection, quality and calculation

Workshop: Participants validate a flawed environmental data set, calculate baseline and intensity indicators, and document data-quality findings.
Day 4: Analysis, interpretation and reporting

Day 5: Implementing and improving Environmental Performance Evaluation

- Integrating EPE with internal audits, corrective action and operational control
- Reviewing indicator suitability and retiring ineffective measures
- Using EPE results to prioritise objectives, projects and capital expenditure

- Implementation roadmaps, pilot testing and continual improvement cycles
Workshop: Participants complete and peer-review an Environmental Performance Evaluation Plan with a 90-day implementation roadmap.
