Course overview
Procurement and contract teams are increasingly expected to demonstrate that sustainability commitments survive beyond supplier selection. A well-scored tender is not enough when contracts lack measurable environmental, social and ethical requirements, reporting obligations, corrective-action routes or enforceable remedies. This course addresses the practical contract-management gap between sustainable procurement policy and day-to-day supplier performance, helping professionals manage sustainability risks across mobilisation, delivery, change, renewal and exit.
Participants apply ISO 20400 guidance to the contract lifecycle. They learn to translate priority sustainability issues into proportionate contract clauses, schedules, supplier KPIs, service-level measures, evidence requirements and governance routines. The programme covers supplier due diligence, risk-based segmentation, baseline setting, performance reviews, non-conformance management, improvement plans, contract variations, escalation and responsible exit. Particular attention is given to balancing commercial leverage, supplier capability and defensible contractual obligations.
Delivery combines instructor-led contract analysis with practical workshops using realistic supply scenarios such as facilities management, construction, technology and outsourced services. Participants redraft weak sustainability provisions, build a supplier performance scorecard, run a contract-review meeting and respond to a material sustainability breach. Each participant leaves with an ISO 20400-aligned Sustainable Contract Management Pack containing a clause checklist, KPI framework, governance calendar, supplier improvement-plan template and 90-day workplace application plan. A certificate of completion is awarded.
The course is designed for experienced procurement, contracts, supplier-management and operational professionals who already work with suppliers or commercial agreements and need a structured method for making sustainability requirements enforceable and manageable after award.

- Category Managers — who set sourcing strategies and need repeatable sustainable contract clauses
- Supplier Relationship Managers — who lead governance meetings and supplier improvement activity
- Commercial Managers — who negotiate terms, variations and renewals with material sustainability implications
- Operations and Facilities Managers — who rely on outsourced providers and need auditable supplier performance data
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have practical experience working with supplier contracts, purchase agreements, framework call-offs or service-level schedules. They should understand basic procurement stages, contract terms such as obligations, KPIs, variations and remedies, and the purpose of supplier performance reviews. Familiarity with their organisation’s procurement policy, contract template and supplier governance process is useful. Participants should be comfortable reviewing contract extracts and using spreadsheets for simple KPI analysis. No legal qualification, sustainability degree, carbon-accounting expertise or prior formal training in ISO 20400 is required; the course explains the standard’s guidance and its contract-management application.
Training methodology
The instructor uses short technical briefings to establish ISO 20400 concepts, followed by contract-mark-up exercises, supplier-risk analysis and facilitated commercial discussions. Participants work with contract extracts, KPI data and supplier scenarios to distinguish aspirational wording from measurable obligations. Small groups design clauses, review evidence packs, chair a simulated performance meeting and decide an escalation response to a sustainability breach. Daily debriefs connect decisions to participants’ own contracts. The final session converts learning into a 90-day implementation plan and a reusable contract-management pack.
