Course overview
Organisational change often stalls not because the strategy is wrong, but because operating elements are pulling in different directions. A new digital platform may be introduced while decision rights remain unclear; a restructure may change reporting lines without changing leadership behaviours; a transformation programme may set ambitious targets without the capabilities, incentives or management systems needed to deliver them. The McKinsey 7S Framework provides a disciplined way to diagnose these interdependencies and identify where misalignment creates delivery risk.
This five-day course teaches participants to use the seven elements—Strategy, Structure, Systems, Shared Values, Skills, Style and Staff—as an applied change-management method. Participants learn to define the current and target organisational state, gather evidence through document review, interviews and workshops, rate alignment across the 7S elements, identify root causes, and prioritise interventions. The course also covers stakeholder engagement, leadership alignment, capability planning, governance design and measurement methods that connect 7S findings to a practical change roadmap.
Delivery combines instructor-led explanation, facilitated case analysis, diagnostic workshops and team-based application exercises. Participants work with 7S diagnostic templates, interview guides, alignment heat maps, prioritisation matrices and change-roadmap formats. By the end of the course, each participant produces a McKinsey 7S organisational change alignment pack for a real or realistic business change: a current-state assessment, target-state design, gap analysis, intervention priorities, ownership model and 90-day action plan.
The course is designed for managers and change professionals who already contribute to transformation, restructuring, operating-model or culture-change initiatives and need a structured method for converting broad organisational concerns into evidence-based action.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Apply the McKinsey 7S Framework to diagnose alignment risks in a transformation or organisational change initiative
- Define current-state and target-state descriptors for Strategy, Structure, Systems, Shared Values, Skills, Style and Staff
- Conduct a 7S evidence review using document analysis, stakeholder interviews and facilitated diagnostic questions
- Create a 7S alignment heat map that distinguishes symptoms, root causes and cross-element dependencies
- Prioritise change interventions with an impact-effort-risk matrix linked to business outcomes
- Design leadership, governance and communication actions that reinforce the target organisational state
- Build a capability and workforce response covering critical roles, skills gaps, learning actions and staffing implications
- Produce a 90-day 7S change alignment roadmap with owners, milestones, measures and review cadences
Benefits of attending
For you
- Gain a recognised, structured language for discussing organisational misalignment with senior leaders and project teams
- Build confidence in diagnosing whether change barriers sit in systems, structure, leadership behaviour, skills or culture
- Create stronger business cases by linking proposed change actions to observable 7S gaps and operational risks
- Add a practical organisational diagnostic pack and 90-day roadmap to your change-management portfolio
- Improve credibility when facilitating cross-functional conversations about operating-model, culture and workforce changes
For your organisation
- Identify hidden dependencies between strategy, structure, systems, people and culture before they delay implementation
- Reduce the risk of isolated change actions that solve visible symptoms while leaving root causes unresolved
- Create a consistent diagnostic approach that can be used across transformation workstreams and business units
- Improve prioritisation of change investment by ranking interventions against impact, effort, risk and ownership
- Strengthen leadership accountability through clearly assigned actions, alignment measures and review cadences
Target competencies
Who should attend
- Change Managers — who need a repeatable diagnostic method for planning and correcting change interventions
- Transformation Programme Managers — who must coordinate workstreams whose operating-model dependencies affect benefits delivery
- Organisational Development Managers — who align culture, capability, leadership practices and workforce initiatives with strategic change
- Business Unit Leaders — who need to translate enterprise transformation objectives into workable local operating arrangements
- HR Business Partners — who support restructures, capability shifts and leadership changes that must reinforce business strategy
- PMO and Portfolio Managers — who need to surface organisational readiness risks alongside project milestones and dependencies
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have experience contributing to a change, transformation, restructuring, operating-model, people or process-improvement initiative. They should understand basic change-management concepts such as stakeholders, change impacts, sponsorship, communications and implementation planning, and be comfortable discussing organisational roles, processes and performance measures. Familiarity with Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint is useful because the course uses templates and visual diagnostic outputs. No prior use of the McKinsey 7S Framework, formal organisational-design qualification, statistical analysis capability or specialist HR-system knowledge is required.
Training methodology
The course uses short instructor-led modules to establish the 7S method, followed by structured application to a transformation case and participants' own organisational contexts. Teams analyse evidence packs, conduct simulated stakeholder interviews, score 7S alignment, build heat maps and test intervention options against delivery risks. Facilitated peer reviews challenge assumptions about culture, leadership and operating-model dependencies. Each day adds a section to an individual change alignment pack, culminating in a presentation of a prioritised 90-day roadmap and implementation measures.
