Course overview

Executive strategy frequently fails during implementation because the organisation is not configured to support it. A new operating model may be announced while decision rights remain unclear; a digital programme may be funded while skills, incentives and management routines still reinforce legacy behaviour. Senior leaders need a disciplined way to diagnose these misalignments, distinguish symptoms from root causes, and agree on changes that can be owned across functions. The McKinsey 7S Framework provides that shared diagnostic language across strategy, structure, systems, shared values, style, staff and skills.

This course applies the McKinsey 7S Framework to executive-level organisational alignment challenges. Participants learn to define a strategic anchor, map the seven elements, gather and interpret evidence, identify reinforcing and contradictory relationships, and prioritise interventions by business impact and feasibility. They practise linking organisational design decisions to governance, performance management, talent architecture, leadership behaviour and operational systems. The course also covers facilitation methods for executive alignment discussions, resistance analysis, change sequencing, accountability design and measures for tracking whether alignment is improving.

Teaching combines instructor-led analysis, executive case discussions, facilitated diagnosis workshops and practical work on a live or realistic organisational issue. Participants use structured 7S assessment templates, stakeholder interview guides, alignment heat maps and intervention prioritisation matrices. By the end of the week, each participant leaves with an executive-ready Organisational Alignment Action Plan: a current-state 7S assessment, prioritised gaps, target-state design principles, named owners, milestones, measures and a communication approach suitable for leadership review.

The course is designed for experienced managers and leaders who influence cross-functional strategy execution, operating-model change, transformation portfolios or enterprise-wide people and process decisions.

Course objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Diagnose organisational misalignment using a structured McKinsey 7S current-state assessment
  • Translate strategic objectives into target-state requirements for all seven 7S elements
  • Construct a 7S alignment heat map that identifies reinforcing relationships and critical contradictions
  • Conduct executive stakeholder interviews using evidence-based 7S diagnostic questions
  • Prioritise alignment interventions with an impact-versus-feasibility matrix and dependency analysis
  • Design governance, decision-rights and performance-management changes that support strategic execution
  • Facilitate an executive alignment workshop using the 7S Framework and documented decision protocols
  • Produce an Organisational Alignment Action Plan with owners, milestones, measures and escalation routes

Benefits of attending

For you

  • Build credibility in executive discussions by diagnosing organisational problems beyond structure alone
  • Gain a repeatable framework for turning strategic intent into organisation, people and systems changes

Who should attend

  • Chief Operating Officers and Operations Directors — who must align operating models, governance and execution routines with enterprise strategy
  • Business Unit Directors — who lead cross-functional delivery and need to resolve conflicting priorities across functions
  • Transformation Directors and Programme Sponsors — who need a structured diagnosis before sequencing major change initiatives
  • Strategy Directors and Corporate Planning Managers — who convert strategic choices into organisation-wide implementation requirements
  • HR Directors and Organisational Development Leaders — who align talent, leadership practices and culture with business direction
  • Senior Change Managers and PMO Leaders — who coordinate dependencies, accountability and adoption across transformation portfolios

Requirements and prerequisites

Participants should have experience leading, sponsoring or supporting strategic, operational or organisational change at departmental, business-unit or enterprise level. Familiarity with strategic planning, operating models, governance structures, KPIs and stakeholder management is assumed, along with the ability to discuss a real organisational challenge in a confidential learning setting. Participants should be comfortable reviewing simple spreadsheets and preparing short executive presentations. Prior formal study of the McKinsey 7S Framework, organisational design, consulting methods or change-management certification is not required; the course introduces the framework and provides all diagnostic templates.

Training methodology

The programme uses short instructor-led briefings to establish the 7S concepts, followed by progressive application to an executive transformation case and, where appropriate, participants’ own organisations. Teams build a 7S evidence base, score alignment, challenge assumptions through stakeholder perspectives, and test intervention choices against strategic priorities and dependencies. Facilitated executive-role simulations develop the language required for difficult alignment conversations. Each day adds a component to the final Organisational Alignment Action Plan, which is reviewed through peer critique and instructor feedback on day five.

Course outline

Day 1: Diagnosing strategic and organisational alignment

  • Strategic execution failure patterns and organisational root causes
  • McKinsey 7S Framework: hard and soft element interactions
  • Defining the strategic anchor and critical business outcomes
  • Current-state versus target-state organisational diagnosis
  • Evidence sources for 7S assessment
  • Symptoms, causes and reinforcing feedback loops
  • Executive alignment questions and diagnostic boundaries

Workshop: Participants complete a first-pass 7S current-state assessment for a transformation case and produce a documented set of diagnostic hypotheses.

Day 2: Analysing the seven organisational elements

  • Strategy: strategic choices, value propositions and execution priorities
  • Structure: accountabilities, spans, interfaces and reporting relationships
  • Systems: planning, budgeting, performance and operational management routines
  • Shared values: organisational purpose, norms and behavioural expectations
  • Style: leadership behaviours, communication patterns and escalation practices
  • Staff: workforce segmentation, succession and talent deployment
  • Skills: capability inventories, critical roles and learning requirements

Workshop: Teams develop a 7S evidence matrix and alignment heat map that distinguishes high-risk gaps from acceptable variation.

Day 3: Designing alignment interventions

  • Target-state design principles and non-negotiable alignment conditions
  • Decision-rights mapping using RAPID roles
  • Governance forums, escalation paths and management cadence design
  • KPI cascades and performance-management alignment
  • Talent, capability and leadership-behaviour interventions
  • Impact-feasibility prioritisation and change dependency mapping
  • Risk analysis for unintended organisational consequences

Workshop: Participants create a prioritised intervention portfolio, including dependencies, risks and recommended sequencing for the case organisation.

Day 4: Leading executive alignment and implementation

  • Executive stakeholder mapping and influence analysis
  • Stakeholder interview guides for 7S evidence gathering
  • Facilitating competing perspectives without premature consensus
  • Alignment workshop agendas and decision protocols
  • Resistance patterns across structure, systems and culture
  • Change narrative development linked to shared values
  • Accountability architecture using RACI and escalation criteria

Workshop: Participants run a simulated executive alignment workshop and produce agreed design decisions, unresolved issues and an escalation log.

Day 5: Building the organisational alignment action plan

  • Consolidating findings into an executive 7S diagnostic narrative
  • Alignment roadmap milestones and implementation waves
  • Ownership assignment and governance reporting requirements
  • Leading and lagging indicators for organisational alignment
  • Dashboard design for strategy-to-execution tracking
  • Executive presentation structure and challenge handling
  • Ninety-day mobilisation planning and review cadence

Frequently asked questions

You should have experience with strategic planning, operational management, transformation, organisational development or cross-functional leadership. You do not need previous training in the McKinsey 7S Framework, but you should be able to relate the discussions to real organisational decisions.

A laptop is strongly recommended for live online delivery and useful in the classroom for completing templates and refining your action plan. The course uses familiar tools such as Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Teams and Miro; no specialist organisational-design software is required.

It is best suited to senior managers, directors and transformation leaders who influence how strategy is implemented across functions. It is not primarily a course on personal leadership style or introductory people management.

This course uses the McKinsey 7S Framework as the central diagnostic and decision method for executive alignment. Rather than focusing only on change communications or reporting structures, it examines the interdependence of strategy, structure, systems, shared values, style, staff and skills.

Yes. Participants are encouraged to bring a suitably anonymised issue such as a merger integration, operating-model redesign, digital transformation or performance turnaround. Course exercises provide structured templates that can be adapted to that issue after the programme.

You will leave with an Organisational Alignment Action Plan containing a 7S assessment, alignment heat map, prioritised interventions, target-state principles, ownership model and 90-day mobilisation plan. You will also retain the diagnostic questions, workshop agenda and reporting templates used during the course.
