Course overview

Business documents often fail not because the writer lacks subject knowledge, but because information is buried, inconsistent, difficult to review, or presented in a format that weakens the message. Managers and clients need proposals, reports, briefing papers, procedures, and decision papers that make their purpose, evidence, recommendations, and required actions immediately clear. This course addresses the practical link between business writing quality and Microsoft Word production: participants learn to turn raw content into controlled, readable documents that stand up to management review.

The course combines structured business-writing methods with the Microsoft Word features needed to apply them reliably. Participants practise analysing readers and document purpose; planning messages with outlines; writing concise openings, headings, paragraphs, recommendations, and calls to action; and editing for clarity, tone, grammar, and consistency. They use Word styles, templates, navigation tools, tables, lists, section breaks, headers and footers, captions, references, Track Changes, comments, compare tools, accessibility checks, and PDF export to create documents that are easy to read, approve, reuse, and maintain.

Delivery is instructor-led and highly practical, using realistic workplace scenarios such as a management briefing, client proposal, operational procedure, and decision report. Each day includes document critiques, live Word demonstrations, guided rebuilds, and peer review using a defined quality checklist. Participants leave with a polished, multi-section business document produced in Word, a reusable document template, an editing checklist, and an individual application plan for improving documents in their role.

  • Project Managers — who issue project reports, governance papers, plans, and status communications
  • Executive Assistants — who prepare leadership briefings, meeting papers, and polished corporate correspondence

  • HR and Learning Professionals — who write policies, employee communications, and programme documentation
  • Technical and Subject-Matter Specialists — who must convert expert information into reader-friendly business documents

Requirements and prerequisites

This is a foundation-to-intermediate course. Participants should be comfortable using a Windows or Mac computer, managing files and folders, and completing basic Word tasks such as entering text, saving documents, and applying simple bold, bullets, or alignment. Familiarity with the business documents used in their role—such as reports, emails, proposals, procedures, or briefing notes—is helpful but not essential. No formal writing qualification, advanced grammar knowledge, desktop publishing experience, or prior use of Word styles, templates, references, Track Changes, or accessibility tools is required. Complete beginners should expect guided practice with core Word functions before progressing to multi-section document production.

Training methodology

The instructor uses short demonstrations in Microsoft Word followed by structured writing and formatting labs. Participants diagnose weak extracts from reports and proposals, rebuild them using reader-focused writing methods, and apply Word tools to live files. Case work covers a management decision paper, an operational procedure, and a client-facing proposal. Peer review sessions use a practical checklist for purpose, structure, readability, formatting, and review control. On the final day, each participant completes a workplace-relevant document and identifies the template, checklist, and process changes they will apply after the course.

Frequently asked questions

No. Participants need only basic confidence creating, saving, and editing Word documents. The course begins with planning and core formatting, then builds toward styles, templates, long-document features, and review controls.

A laptop with the desktop version of Microsoft Word for Microsoft 365 is strongly recommended for live online delivery and useful in classroom sessions. Most exercises can be completed in recent desktop versions of Word; the browser version has fewer advanced layout and review functions.

It is designed specifically for the point where business writing and Word document production meet. Unlike a general Word course, every feature is taught through reports, proposals, briefing papers, procedures, and review workflows; unlike a writing-only course, participants build and control the actual files.

It is especially valuable for professionals who prepare documents for managers, clients, project boards, regulators, or operational teams. It also suits subject-matter experts whose knowledge is strong but whose documents need clearer structure and more consistent presentation.

You can apply the planning framework before drafting any significant report or proposal, then use Word styles and templates to produce it consistently. The review and quality-assurance methods also help you manage comments, approvals, accessibility, and final PDF publication with less rework.

Participants leave with a completed multi-section business document, a reusable Word template, a document quality checklist, and an individual application plan. These materials are designed to be adapted to the participant's own report, procedure, proposal, or briefing-paper requirements.
