Course overview
Microfinance institutions increasingly use mobile money to collect loan instalments, disburse loans, pay agents, receive savings deposits and manage customer cash flows beyond the branch. Yet many operations teams still rely on manual reconciliation, unclear agent responsibilities and incomplete exception handling. The result is delayed posting, untraceable transaction failures, liquidity shortages, customer complaints and avoidable exposure to fraud, AML/CFT breaches and data-quality errors. This course addresses the operational controls needed to run mobile money services reliably within an MFI.
Participants learn how mobile money ecosystems work across the MFI, mobile network operator, payment service provider, agent network and core banking system. They map end-to-end transaction flows; design operating procedures for cash-in, cash-out, loan repayment and digital disbursement; reconcile settlement files; manage agent float and branch liquidity; investigate failed or reversed transactions; and apply customer protection, KYC, AML/CFT and fraud-control measures. The course also covers integration decisions, service-level metrics, exception registers and management reporting.
Delivery combines instructor-led explanations with practical transaction scenarios, spreadsheet-based reconciliation, operating-control workshops and sector case studies. Participants work with sample mobile money transaction logs, settlement reports, agent performance data and incident cases to make operational decisions under realistic conditions. Each participant leaves with a tailored Mobile Money Operations Playbook containing process maps, a daily reconciliation checklist, an exception-management workflow, key risk controls, dashboard metrics and a 90-day implementation plan for their institution.

Requirements and prerequisites

Experience with a mobile wallet, agent banking or payment operations is beneficial but not essential. No coding, API development, advanced accounting qualification or prior experience with a specific mobile money platform is required. Complete beginners can attend, but should expect to learn core payment terminology such as wallet, float, settlement, reversal, agent and transaction reference.
Training methodology
The course uses short instructor-led modules to establish payment-operating concepts, followed by applied work with realistic MFI transaction files. Participants map a mobile loan repayment journey, reconcile provider and core-banking records in Excel, calculate agent-float needs, classify transaction exceptions and respond to fraud and customer-complaint scenarios. Group case work examines an MFI rolling out mobile disbursements through a provider partnership. Daily review sessions convert lessons into controls, and the final workshop produces an institution-specific operations playbook and 90-day action plan.

- Service-level agreements, operating cut-off times and responsibility matrices
Workshop: Participants map the current-state mobile repayment and loan-disbursement journey for a case MFI and identify ownership, data hand-offs and control points.
Day 2: Transaction Processing, Reconciliation and Settlement
