Course overview
Organizations cannot demonstrate resilience merely by keeping an emergency plan on file. They need an integrated program that connects risk assessment, incident management, continuity strategies, crisis communications, recovery priorities, exercises, and continual improvement. This course addresses the practical challenge faced by HSE, resilience, security, facilities, and operations professionals: translating the requirements of NFPA 1600 into a defensible continuity and emergency management program that can be implemented, tested, and reported to leadership.
Participants work through the NFPA 1600 program-management approach, including leadership commitment, program scope, planning assumptions, hazard identification, business impact analysis, risk assessment, prevention and mitigation, incident response, continuity strategies, communications, training, exercises, and corrective action. They learn to map existing plans and procedures against NFPA 1600 criteria, define recovery objectives, establish emergency roles, build exercise objectives, and maintain evidence of program performance. The course also shows how NFPA 1600 aligns with ISO 22301 and commonly used emergency-management practices.
Instruction combines expert-led explanation with scenario-based workshops built around a realistic operational disruption. Participants use templates to develop a continuity and emergency management program structure, conduct a focused impact and risk assessment, identify recovery strategies, and design an exercise and corrective-action process. Each attendee leaves with an NFPA 1600-aligned program gap-assessment checklist and a practical 90-day implementation roadmap that can be adapted to their organization.

Requirements and prerequisites

Participants should be comfortable reading policies, process maps, and simple risk matrices, and should be able to use spreadsheet templates. Prior certification in NFPA standards, ISO 22301, incident command, or business continuity is not required. This is an intermediate course; complete beginners should first gain basic exposure to emergency management or continuity terminology.
Training methodology
The course uses instructor-led NFPA 1600 interpretation sessions, facilitated discussions, worked examples, and team workshops. Participants assess a simulated organization facing a facility outage, supply disruption, cyber incident, and severe-weather event. They build program components in sequence: governance, impact analysis, risk treatment, continuity strategies, incident arrangements, exercise design, and corrective actions. The instructor reviews completed templates against NFPA 1600 criteria and provides practical feedback. The final session converts each participant’s findings into an organization-specific 90-day application plan.
